Frank Wilsford Johnston, of Hammond, passed away peacefully at his home Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011. Born in Greenwood, Miss., on June 30, 1918, Frank was the third child to Means Johnston (attorney for LeFleur County, Miss.,) and Annie Wilsford Johnston. He was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Anne Hughes Johnston Emmons, Admiral Means Johnston Jr., and William Edward Johnston; his first wife, Helene Murray, who was of Staten Island, N.Y.; and his second wife, Georgine Stewart Burt, who was of Hammond. He is survived by his stepdaughter and stepson, Rebecca Burt and Edward Burt, of Hammond; three nephews, two nieces, and multiple grandnephews and grandnieces. As a young man, Frank attended the Greenbrier Military Academy, White Sulfur Springs, W.Va., and the University of Mississippi at Oxford. He enlisted in August 1941, and was assigned as a class specialist, keeping the officers' records at the Las Vegas Gunnery School for the Army Air Corps during World War II. He was discharged in January 1946, as a staff sergeant. Upon returning home after the war, Frank went to work for Billups Petroleum Co. in the Greenwood Tire, Battery and Accessory Department, rising to senior vice president of Operations at his retirement in 1983. Frank will be remembered as an avid bird hunter, a fabulous dancer, a lover of all SEC football games and the epitome of a Delta gentleman. Graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Cemetery in Hammond on Tuesday, Nov. 22, at 11 a.m. An online guest book is available at www.harrymckneely.com.
