Joseph Mayers Obituary

Our dad, Clark Mayers is completing his life journey by returning home to his beloved Louisiana. He returned to God's loving care in complete peace on February 5, 2013 in Kansas City, MO. He was born November 23, 1937 in the rural community of Brignac in Ascension Parish and, though he lived his adult life many miles from his childhood home, he always considered St. Amant to be his true home and his childhood friends in Louisiana to be his true friends. Visitation will be at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in St. Amant, Louisiana on February 14, 2013 from 9:00am - 11:00am. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00am followed by burial with full military honors at Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church. He will be near his parents, Venance J. "Gro" Mayers and Cammie (Blouin) Mayers, his brother John Wayne Mayers, and his sister Brenda Ann Mayers. His surviving siblings are Ralph Mayers of Gonzales, Louisiana, Barry Mayers (wife Erva) of Lake, Louisiana and Darnell Mayers of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Clark graduated from St. Amant High school in 1955 and Louisiana State University (Petroleum Engineering) in 1959. He later completed graduate programs in Management at Webster University and in Military Studies at the Marine Corps Command and Staff College. He enlisted in the Marine Corps as a Private while a student at LSU. Following graduation he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant, rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, and served on active duty until 1980. He served in all three active Marine Divisions and in several staff positions at various posts. He was an Artillery Officer in the 10th Marines, Third Marine Division in Japan, Okinawa and The Philippines and then was transferred to Miami, Florida where he was Assistant Inspector-Instructor for a Marine Reserve Artillery Battalion and later with the 4th Air Naval Gunfire Liaison Company. He was transferred to the Second Marine Division in North Carolina, where he was Commanding Officer of an artillery battery in the 10th Marines. After training as a Data Processing Officer, he served as a staff officer in the Computer Systems Division at Headquarters Marine Corps in Washington, D.C. He then served in the First Marine Division in Vietnam as Commanding Officer of the 11th Marines' First 8-inch Artillery Battery, as Battalion Executive Officer and as First Marine Division Liaison Officer to the Republic of Korea Marine Corps 2nd Brigade. That was followed by another tour of duty at Headquarters Marine Corps as a staff officer in the Manpower Department. After attending the Marine Corps Command and Staff College, he was transferred to the Marine Corps Automated Services Center in Kansas City, Missouri. He was Head of the Computer Systems Design and Programming Division until he left active duty and transferred to the Marine Corps Retired List in January 1980. For his Marine Corps service, Clark received the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" for service in Vietnam, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for service at Headquarters Marine Corps. His 10th Marines, Second Marine Division artillery battery received the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal for combat operations during the Dominican Republic Intervention in 1965. His private business career included Data Services Manager in a regional general accounting firm and Director of Information Services in a Sprint subsidiary company. In civilian life he continued to serve others by remaining active in civic and community affairs. Our dad insisted that we include his last correspondence, as follows: "With God's grace and blessings, I have lived a wonderful life. At no time during my lifetime would I have traded my beloved parents or my childhood and early adult life with my many friends in south Louisiana for any other family, time, or place. While I was living most of my life in Florida, North Carolina, Virginia, and Kansas, my thoughts and a large part of my heart remained on Black Bayou Road. The joy and greatest rewards of my life are my children and their families. Even with everything my children have accomplished, and their loving, thoughtful and helping behaviors, the greatest pleasure for me is that there is nothing but goodness in their hearts. There is not a trace of malice or bias toward anyone. My daughter Michelle Frederick, husband Lonny and their children Jordan and Erin live in Olathe, Kansas. My daughter Kimberly Gampper and her husband Jim live in Overland Park, Kansas. My daughter Christine Richter, husband Mike and their children Ryan and Jack live in Flower Mound, Texas. My son Sean, wife Tracie (VandeVen) and their children Ethan and Julia live in Overland Park, Kansas. May God continue to bless them as I have been blessed. From the birth of my firstborn child, my children made my life a joy. To the last day they made my life possible."" "Let me watch my children grow, to see what they become. Lord, don't let that cold wind blow, till I'm too old to die young." Lyrics from "Till I'm Too Old to Die Young." He requested no flowers or gifts, asking instead that you consider helping and praying for someone in need, especially children. Dad lived his life with honor, integrity, and compassion toward all. We are forever grateful for all he has taught us and the love he shared with each of us unconditionally. In service to Corps and country, in his civilian business career, in his family life, and in his personal life, he tried to live by the Marine Corps motto "Semper Fidelis - Always Faithful." In the finest tradition of the United States Marine Corps, we wish him Godspeed. Semper Fidelis. Please offer your condolences to the family at www.oursofh.com.

Sorry to hear of the lost of Mr. Mayers. The Bible tells us “Draw close to God, and he will draw close to you.”. One of the principal ways to draw close to God is thorough prayer. Do not underestimate its value!
