Marion Banks Obituary

Marion R. Banks, affectionately known as ""Meme"" (85), a native and longtime resident of Plaquemine, La., was granted her angel's wings when she passed away peacefully on February 25, 2013 surrounded by her family at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. Visitation will be at Greater St. Mary Baptist Church in Plaquemine, La. on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. conducted by her Pastor, Rev. Geoffery Sykes. Marion was born on May 12, 1927 in Plaquemine to Decoli Noble and was later adopted and raised by Adeline Doakes Robertson and Milton Robertson. She was called into Christian service and baptized in May of 1944 at Greater St. Mary Baptist Church by the late Rev. Price. A devoted member of God's army of earthbound angels, she dedicated 68 years of service to her faith and her beloved church. With a loving heart, a giving spirit and a sense of style no one could match (she was well known for her beautiful suits and hats), she served as a deaconess, choir member, a member of the Mission Ministry and helped to organize many of the church's most successful programs including Women's Day. Her favorite scripture was Psalm 27:7 and she could often be heard humming her favorite hymn, ""I'll Fly Away."" Marion was joined in the holy covenant of marriage with Willie Banks, Sr. on May 17, 1943. From this blessed union, there were 6 children: Willie, Jr., Meriam, Gail, Michael, Gregory, Deniece, and one grandchild reared as their own, Terrance. In their children, they instilled the importance of family, hard work and a love for God, a legacy that has since been passed down to their grandchildren and great grandchildren. Marion was educated in the Iberville Parish School System. She went on to further her studies in food and nutrition at both Southern University and Nicholls State University. A strong believer in education, she showed by example that there are no limits to learning when you put your mind to it. She was employed by the Iberville Parish School System as a food service manager for 25+ years. She was adored by her co-workers and the students for whom she prepared nourishing meals with love. Marion was a longtime member of several local community engagement groups, including the Tempie Chapter #58, Order of the Eastern Stars, Progressive Matrons Social and Civic Club and Ameliorants Social Aid Club. The city of Plaquemine recognized Marion's lifelong commitment to her community by proclaiming her 80th birthday, May 12, 2007, as Marion R. Banks Day. Meme leaves to cherish her memories five children: Ret. Col. Willie (Eunice) Banks, Alexandria, La.; Gregory Banks, Plaquemine; Meriam Banks, Plaquemine; Gail B. White, Baton Rouge; Deniece Banks, Plaquemine; and Terrance (Kia) Muhammad, Carson, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Byron Banks, Baton Rouge; Jerrold (Charlynn) Banks, Baton Rouge; Leonardo (Maya) Banks, Sr., Port Allen; Patrick (Renee) Banks, Port Allen; Brian (Chasity) Banks, Plaquemine; Carlyle (Tywanda) Banks, Brusly; Boris White, Baton Rouge; Mario Mitchell, Baton Rouge; Kenniece (Patrick) Jones, Metairie; and Lexie Banks, Plaquemine; 13 great grandchildren, Taheerah, Taliah and Khadir Muhammad, Carson, Calif.; Jerromie Banks, Baton Rouge; Jazlyn Banks, Slidell; Jeremiah Banks, Dallas, Texas; Leonardo Banks, Jr., Port Allen; Patrick, Jr. and Kaleb Banks, Port Allen; Maleik Mitchell, Baton Rouge; Malia, Jordan and Briana Jones, Metairie; one godchild, Reginald Elwood; special friends, Cordeal Breaux, Estelle Simmons, Marion Washington and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. We will sorely miss her. However, it gives us great comfort that her parents; loving husband of 55 years, Willie Banks, Sr.; sister, Elnora, Green; and son, Michael P. Banks, will be on the other side to welcome her. May we all rejoice in her life and carry on her legacy. Arrangements entrusted to Roscoe Mortuary, Plaquemine. 225-647-4216.
