James Atteberry Obituary

James G. Atteberry died peacefully at home late Thursday morning June 6, 2013 at the age of 86. Born September 2, 1926 in Crowley, LA, he grew up among the great rice fields of Acadiana Parish. In 1944, Jim joined the Navy as a signalman and was aboard a small LCI gunboat off the coast of Japan when the War ended. He was proud to serve his country and loved to share tales from his adventures at sea. After honorable discharge from the Navy he came home and graduated from LSU with a degree in civil engineering in 1948. While seeking his fortune with Gulf Oil in Venezuela in 1951 he found the love of his life, an English girl, Doris May Raynham. They were married in England in 1954 and returned to Baton Rouge where Jim began a long career with the Dept. of Public Works. He and Doris joined the Broadmoor Presbyterian Church where he participated as a Boy Scout leader, softball coach, choir member, and Deacon. After retiring as Asst. Chief Engineer in 1981 from DPW, he spent his golden years traveling with Doris across America, England, and Europe visiting family and friends. He loved discussing politics and the affairs of the world at his monthly luncheons with his DPW retirement gang and shared these thoughts in his regular letters to The Advocate. He spent much of his final years as a caregiver to his beloved Doris, an Alzheimer's patient, and developed great love and respect for the healthcare workers who attended to her needs and his in his final battle with cancer. Jim was a genuinely loving husband, father, family member, and friend to many. We will all remember the fun times we shared with him, but will miss him very much. Jim was preceded in death by his father, James G. Atteberry, Sr., mother, Jeanette Hulin Atteberry, and sister, Jean Atteberry Hanagriff He is survived by his wife, Doris Raynham Atteberry, and sons Philip and Richard Atteberry. We would like to thank Our Lady of the Lake, Cypress Home Health, Hospice of Baton Rouge, Regency Place Nursing and Rehabilitation, and his Doctors for their treatments and care of his medical needs. A memorial service for Jim will be conducted by Rev. Hawley Wolfe on Saturday, June 15 at Broadmoor Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am with visitation preceding from 9:00 to 11:00 am. After the service, lunch and fellowship will be provided in the church fellowship hall for his many friends and family.

I am so sorry to hear of this sad news and offer my condolences to his family. While I knew Jim only for a relatively short time of his 86 years here on Earth, I considered him to be a friend and a great person and one who stood up for what he believed in. Rest in peace, Jim.

Richard and Phillip,
I am so sorry to learn of your Dad's passing.....As a child I have many fond memories of time with your family, whether it was an overnight at the Atteberry house, a LSU football game, or a weekend fishing trip your dad was there to ensure the experience was all it could be.

As you celebrate Jim's life cherish those many memories.
