Memories and Condolences
for Asa French

Not sure what to say?

Although it has been a long time, I just learned of Asa's passing and I am incredibly sad about the loss of a really great guy. Although we only spoke occasionally and only were able to meet up when I was in New Orleans, I cannot tell you how sad it is to know that he is gone. I'll miss him greatly - he was a friend who I will always remember with great fondness.

24 years ago I was a rokie NOPD rookie reserve officer, Asa took me under his wing and helped me a lot in my formative years. Whenever we were together we always had a good time and a good laugh. He truly lived life and will always be remembered.

My thoughts and prayers are with Asa's family, friends, and brothers and sisters of the New Orleans Police Department. What a hoot Asa was, always smiling. I met you when I 15 years old because I was dating your friend and set you up with my best friend as a blind date. Little did I know at that time that as the years would pass us by our families and lives would forever be connected. Friends through our first marriages, and still friends after our respective divorces and friends with the new spouses, mine (Charlie) and Cheryl's (Tom), and the fact that you and Cheryl christened my youngest daughter, Jennifer, confirmed the family/extended family we always were. It was always a joke with Cheryl and I about how much alike Cindy and Jennifer were. We were friends for over 37 years, good, bad, or indifferent, but we were and remained friends. ..... not going to keep this too mushy - I know you'd be rolling your eyes at this point saying ok, ya done??? LOL. I do have to tell everyone about you throwing me over your shoulder like a sack of potatoes at the reception of my first marriage, mini dress and all to get me out of the hall because I was taking too long. What a character! You took on a ready made family, became a dad, adding that last little papoose and enjoyed a good life. I guess,Indian, with a heavy heart, and lots of memories, laughtr & tears, I have to say goodbye. I know you are no longer in pain, at peace and can watch over Robbie, Wendy, Cindy, Austin & Dalton, and yeah, even Cheryl and Tom, who turned out to be your good and reliable friends. (oh yeah, I always called A.J. Indian from the time I first met him so I couldn't let him get by that easily) As always, my love to the kids, Gary & Ruthie & their family and Carolyn & Harold. Rest in Peace old friend. Kathy

**this is my personal good-bye to an old friend.
To Robby, Wendy & Cindy, I know you will miss your dad and Charlie and I are so sorry for your loss. Love and prayers, Aunt Kathy and Charlie.

I remember having Asa in my science class at McDonogh High School in the middle 1960's when I just started teaching. You don't forget the first groups of students you taught-and Asa was one of the special ones--polite, hard-working, always with a smile on his face. I know his family will miss him a great deal--I will pray for you all.

Thank you to Asa for always being the first person I saw at Erin Rose when coming in off the road from Austin. I know he looked out for my son and his girlfriend when they made their first trip to New Orleans and told me not to worry so much on the Saturday night I let them go out on their own. I am thankful to have been the recipient of Asa's love and big hugs and his sharing of beautiful New Orleans with me and my friends and family. I know he is always there in spirit with each and every one of us and many prayers and blessings to his friends and family. Thank you for sharing your love of your beautiful city with me and mine and for taking care and looking out for us.

We will forever remember that huge smile, bear hug and the kindness showed to Liz and I. The kinda fella that never met a stranger, always took time to chat and more so a true Nu Awlins example of a southern gentleman...

Asa always had a hug, a smile, and a bit of advice when I needed it. This Mardi Gras I had some troubling and all consuming personal problems arise, putting a dent in my plans. When I took an hour in the afternoon to toddle down to Erin Rose,it was Asa who hugged my neck and listened intently, made sure I got some beads on, and bought me a beer. He sent me home with wise words and a kiss on the cheek that made the rest of my day bearable. I know I'm not the only one who will muss his genuine and generous spirit. I feel honored to have known him the short time I did. Thank you, Asa.

My heart hurts at Asa's passing . I last t saw him at French Quarter Festival after I'd been away a few years. I heard a yell and there he was. Big hug and smooch later and someone asked if this was an old girl friend , and he said, "Something like that." Something like that was how everybody in the Quarter felt about Asa French. And him for us. Always a smile. Miss you, Asa.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of my old friend, Asa. Whether he was protecting the public or participating in one of the many parades in New Orleans, that famous smile was always there. One of my favorite memories of Asa was the sight of him in full NOPD uniform directing traffic in DC during the Washington Mardi Gras festivities. Many a tear will be shed on Decatur Street. We will miss our own Officer Friendly.
