Edgar Zammit Obituary

Edgar Matthew Zammit, 95, passed away after a short illness January 3, 2013 at his home in Pearland, TX, with his loving family by his side. He was born March 11, 1917 in Baton Rouge, LA and a graduate of Baton Rouge High School in 1935. After one year of Civil Engineering at LSU, his father passed away, and Ed worked building houses with his lifelong friend, Slim Eaton. When WWII began in Europe, Ed enlisted in the Army Air Corps, and met his future wife, Elva Ruth Fisher of Welsh, LA, while stationed in Alexandria. After Pearl Harbor, he served his country in England and France in the 9th Air Force, 333rd Service Division, attaining the rank of Tech Sergeant. After returning to Baton Rouge, he married Elva on Nov. 23, 1945 and they enjoyed 67 happy years together. He worked for Standard Oil at the Baton Rouge refinery, starting in the accounting department and retiring from the Exxon laboratories in 1979 after 33 years. He lived most of his retirement years in Baton Rouge, moving with Elva in 2007 to Trinity Oaks in Pearland, TX to be near their oldest daughter. Ed's greatest passion was his family, and he spent most of his time providing for them and nurturing them. He spent many hours with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, reading, making kites, telling stories, fixing cars, and countless other activities. His hobbies included fishing, dancing to big band music, house construction and repairing anything that was broken. He loved being outdoors, and taught many of us the pleasure of walking the neighborhoods, often with a pocket full of pecans to enjoy along the way. Ed is survived by his wife, Elva Ruth (Fisher) Zammit, his sons, Ronald and Kent Zammit of Arroyo Grande, CA, his daughters, Patrice Belcher of Pearland, TX and Lisa Davenport of Savannah, GA, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services were held January 7, 2013 in Pearland, TX. Donations in memory of Ed may be made to the American Cancer Society.
