James Ruffin Davis, Sr., passed away peacefully at his Wakefield, Louisiana home on Friday, April 26, 2013. He was a long time resident of Baton Rouge, where he and his wife, Bell, raised their nine children. He was 95 - years - old. He gave his life to Christ when he was just a teenager. While raising his family in Baton Rouge, he served for many years as a deacon at Mount Olive Baptist Church. He and his wife spent their later years together spreading the work of God in various religious settings in the Baton Rouge area. James was active in the civil rights movement of the 60s, often involving his nine children in boycotts and sit-ins. A man of great wisdom and charity, many will remember his wit and smile. He had an incurable sweet tooth and his grandchildren will remember he was always armed with a treat. He loved to read his Bible. He loved his family, and his farm. Preceding him in death were his parents Montrose Douglas Hamilton and Irine C. Davis; brothers Bill Hamilton, Johnny Hampton and Phillip White; grandchildren Johnnie Davis, Jr. and Yotachia Thibodeaux, and great grandchildren, Juan Holmes and Joshua Hills. Left to mourn are his wife of 73 years Bell Franklin Davis and their children: Irene Candy Anderson (Jarrot) of Baton Rouge LA; Belle Til Lucien (Raymond) of Seattle, WA; James R. Davis, Jr. (Annie) of Zachary, LA; Johnnie Davis, Sr. (Mary) of Baker, LA; Rose Diane Davis of Baton Rouge, LA; Joyce Ann Sims (Ambrose) of St. Francisvile, LA; Evelyn Elaine Davis of Baton Rouge, LA; Delores Andrews (Albert) of Baton Rouge, LA; and JoAnne Talbot (Dudley) of St. Francisville, LA; 19 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Miller and Daughter Mortuary, 5905 Highway 19, Zachary, LA on May 1, 2013 at 10:00 AM with service immediately following at 11:00 AM. Interment in Wakefield at the Davis-Hamilton Family cemetery. The Rev. Ervin Coleman, officiating.
