Mark McBride Obituary

Mac died Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at his home in Baton Rouge, LA, to the great shock and sorrow of his friends. The coroner says that his heart was too big; that came as no surprise to his friends, who will remember him for his incredible generosity. He was known as "Mac", a name that suited his friendly nature. Mac liked to play jokes, and laughed frequently. He hated suits and favored colorful shirts, as if he lived on some island in a Jimmy Buffet song. He was extremely intelligent, but he would never let on that he had attended the U.S. Naval Academy for two years, and had two Masters Degrees, in addition to his medical training for his last job with Acadian Ambulance. He worked for a while in Washington, DC as a financial analyst, estimating the value of media companies. He wasn't originally from Louisiana, but this is where he always felt at home, so he moved to Baton Rouge nearly three decades ago, working for computer software development companies until he came to his calling - savings people's lives as an emergency medical technician. Although Mac never married or had children, he would have been a great father. He was very thoughtful and considerate. He could have a long, interesting conversation with anyone, regardless of how long he knew the person, or if they had anything in common. He loved his dogs, and raised them right. On the few holidays he wasn't working, the Ferguson family was often honored to have him as a guest. He would good-naturedly wear the Santa suit, or hide the Easter eggs with little coercion. His other adopted family included his friends at Acadian Ambulance Services. Visitation will be Thursday, May 16, 2013, from 5pm to 7pm at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government St.

What a shocker! Mark and I took an A&P class together, and then I got to know him as a Paramedic who would come to pick up patients @ Pennington Cancer Center Inpatient unit. He was extremely smart, and always so kind! So sorry to have read of his death. Rest in peace, Mark

Uncle Mark-O, we met only one time in my life, and even at my young age, I could tell you were a great, caring, individual. You made me proud to be a part of your family immediately, and you did a great job of making us feel welcome. I remember you un-begrudgingly driving me and my two brothers, for who knows how long, to the closest arcade you could find, which turned out to be hours away, just because we said we wanted to go. That was quite a ride back! It was obvious you were always so giving of yourself. Time and distance have parted us since then but you were never far from my thoughts. Fair winds and following seas Uncle Mark-O, I have missed my chance to know you the way I would have liked, but you have touched the lives of others and will not be forgotten. My gratitude to the Sharkeys for providing me this opportunity to say goodbye.

It has been a Pleasure, Honor, and Priviledge, to serve on the board of LANREMT (La Assoc of Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technicians). Your knowledge and humor helped make the LONG boring meetings bearable. If it hadnt been for your enduring action of being web master and guru, there would be a lot of medics without the knowledge of what LANREMT was up to. Go forth in peace and REST EASY my Brother, gone but never forgotten! DING !

Mac, what a great honor it has been to know you. Meeting you at MBA school (only one of your many academic pursuits), your visit to Florida, talking politics and sports with Mukul, laughing at your stories and wry observations. Sending wildlife magazines and posters to my kids - and always bringing them a preposterous assortment of “shark” gag gifts for years on end - who does that? Who? A one and only, my friend - A HUGE-HEARTED bigger than life kind of guy! You will be missed!

Mac was a wonderful person with a heart of gold! He was dedicated to prehospital care, very intelligent individual, gifted writer, a member of Capital area EMT association and Louisiana Association of Nationally Registered EMTs, most of all he was a friend and co-worker. Being one of his supervisors some don't know every major holiday I would get a phone call from Mac. He would volunteer to take anyone's shift that wanted to be home with their family to just let him know. Can't stand the thought of not being able to have another conversation with you at work. I can just hear you fussing at all of us for feeling so sad, rest assured we will never forget you. RIP Mac!

I was fortunate to be one of the friends Mac made while at Ole Miss, and we kept in touch periodically through the years. His wit, intelligence, and kind spirit will always keep him in my heart. Words truly cannot express my gratitude for Mac and for his influence in my life. His family and friends have my deepest sympathy in their loss.

I am deeply saddened about the sudden passing of Mark. I never worked beside him, but I work in the Baton Rouge maintenance shop for Acadian Ambulance. It was a great pleasure to meet Mark and see him every once in a while, whether it was in the shop or on the road. He was a real nice fellow and he always joked around, and was always very cheerful,I never saw him in a bad mood. He had a really big heart, and will be truly missed by all that knew him. R.I.P. big MAC!

My Brother in Law. I loved him as a Brother! As the years flew by, I only wished I could have stayed in closer contact, but Mark taught me a lot, about Business, and how to play the political game! I pray he is in the presence of those he treasured the most. His Mom and Grandma Gingy! Love you Mark "O". .. Lane "O"

To Mark's family.
I had the privilege to work and get to know Mark. He came into work during my shift. I looked forward to that Subaru driving in and him putting all his gadgets on at the back. When I walked up he always had a big smile and would say"June Bug". We would talk awhile then get back to work. He liked to go to the shooting range and shoot his very old pistols. I tell you this because I left the company and Mark stayed in touch. Most medics have stories like this. He was a person that you were always glad to see. Our hearts are heavy and will be for a long time. Family is not always blood.

Oh how you are missed! My friend, I hope you know just how much you were loved, how much you were respected, and how you touched so many lives with your simple way. I will always think of you while enjoying a bag of coconut M&M's, or when I find a bargain I know you could appreciate. Rest easy! We love you and will always treasure your memory.

It is with great sadness that I am writing this. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. I came to know Mark through my job with Acadian Ambulance. He was a wonderful co-worker who cared for his patients more that himself, always making sure they were comfortable and happy. He always had a smile and the wisdom that I gained from just knowing him I will use for my entire career. I am honored to have been no just a co-worker, but also just to call him a friend. We at Acadian have lost a vital asset from our company and one very special guy.You will be missed.
