Tess Schornstein Obituary

Tess Levy Schornstein, formerly of New Orleans, died peacefully on Sunday, February 23, 2014 in her home at the St. James Place retirement community in Baton Rouge. Born on April 15, 1925, Mrs. Schornstein lived in New Orleans throughout her life until moving to Baton Rouge after Hurricane Katrina. She graduated from Isidore Newman School in 1942, earning her Bachelor's degree from Sophie Newcomb College and her Masters in Social Work from Tulane University. Throughout the 1950s she was employed in the Social Services Division at Charity Hospital. In 1962 she married Moise Schornstein, Jr., who predeceased her in 2004. Mrs. Schornstein was a lifetime member of Temple Sinai Congregation in New Orleans. She was the daughter of the late Laz Levy and Rita Goldstein Levy. She is survived by her brother and sister-in-law, Byron and Carol Levy, her stepson Michael Schornstein, her granddaughter Jackie Schornstein, her nieces Cindy Levy and Nancy Midvidy, her nephew Ron Levy and her six grand nephews. Graveside services were held on Thursday, February 27 at 11:00 AM in Hebrew Rest Cemetery No. III, 2100 Pelopidas St. at Frenchmen Street, with Rabbi Edward Paul Cohn officiating. Mr. and Mrs Schornstein were my neighbors when I lived at 3639 Octavia Street. They were wonderful neighbors. I will always remember the love that they had for each other.
