Dorothy "Dottie" Gates Crockett, 62, died peacefully on May 13, 2012, at her Baton Rouge residence. Dorothy was born on December 21, 1949, in Anniston, Alabama, to Annie Pearl Gates and Willie James Ogletree. She graduated from her hometown high school, Cobb Ave High, in 1968. While attending Cobb, she was active in the History Club, Annual Staff and FHA Club. Her love of extracurricular activities would continue even in her later years. After her graduation, she moved to New York City, New York, in order to pursue new and exciting career opportunities available to her in the big city. In 1970, while still living in New York, she met the love of her life, Clarence Joseph Crockett, Jr. A little over a year later, on September 18, 1971, they became husband and wife. Soon after they would move to Baton Rouge, LA, the hometown of her husband. In 1974, she was hired by Blue Cross Blue Shield of Louisiana, where she enjoyed an impressive 38-year career and also rose to the position of Director of Plan Performance. Despite health issues and the demands of being wife, mother and executive, she was a member of various clubs including but not limited to: the Exchange Club of Baton Rouge, where she had the honor of serving as president from 1997-1998, the League of Women Voters, and a host of others. She also had a charitable side. Dorothy donated to many organizations such as the American Red Cross, Junior Achievement and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Dorothy is survived by her loving and devoted husband Clarence, their two children Christopher Matthew Crockett, Baton Rouge, LA, and Kerrie Samantha Crockett, Miami Beach, FL; her siblings, Eddie M. Gates, Birmingham, AL, Carolyn G. Jones, Anniston, AL, Sharon Stockdale, Anniston, AL, and Michael A. Gates, Oxford, AL. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Willie James Ogletree and Annie Pearl Gates. Viewing for Dorothy begins at 9 a.m. with the service starting at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 19, 2012, at St. Isidore Catholic Church, 5657 Thomas Road, Baton Rouge, LA, 70811, with Father Frank Bass officiating. I worked with Dottie many years at Blue Cross and she was truly one of the most interesting and intelligent people I've known. Though we were not able to attend the services, my family and I were saddened to hear that she'd passed. We want to say to Kerrie and Chris that you are in our prayers, and that God is able to fill that void you'll find now that your Mother is no longer here. Lean on God for your strength! If there is anything I can do to help you, just give me a call.

I am very sorry for the loss of Mrs. Dottie. I didn't know her but knew her daughter Kerrie-who taught my son in band in Plaquemine. If Kerrie was anything like her Mother, then she was an awesome woman. Kerrie and family, praying that God will comfort your hearts.

Mrs. Dorothy was my Director in Plan Performance at Blue Cross. She was very knowledgeable about the functions of Blue Cross and an excellent mentor, she can never be replaced. She was very compassionate about her work and her employees. If there was a problem and she knew you were right, she would stand beside you and speak up for you. It's not often you find genuine people in life but she was just that, “genuine”. I am truly blessed I had the opportunity to get to know her as a person and a friend. I will take what I've learned from her and cherish it for a lifetime. My heart and prayers goes out to the family, may the Lord give you'll strength through these tough times.

Wow, what can I say about Dottie that has not already been said??? I agree about the great story telling....she definitely knew how to tell a story....teaching you life lessons when you didn't even realize that she was doing it. I worked directly for her for 10 years, and she has definitely had a huge impact on the person I am today. At the time I didn't realize she was helping me to improve in life and in business, but mostly just in life. I will never every forget her..she was so intelligent and loved her family so much, and loved her Blue Cross family as well. I will never forget her. She was a unique individual.

CJ, Chris and Kerrie, THANK YOU for sharing Dorothy over the years. You are her world and she was forever grateful for her beautiful family. I called her the "Everready Bunny" because she kept going and going, regardless of the obstacles.
She was a historian, teacher, mentor, awesome storyteller, confidant and friend with a huge sense of humor, I will always cherish Crockett's fond memories.
My prayers are with you during this very difficult time and may God continue showering His blessings upon the entire Crockett and Gates family.

I worked with Dorothy at Blue Cross. When we met she had a smile and a joke. When I left Blue Cross she had a smile and a joke. This was her everyday character.
I never met the family but heard often of her husband and children. There was never a dull moment when around Dorothy.
My prayer for the family is for God to bring peace and serenity in their lives as they morn the loss of their mother, wife, and daughter-in-law.
May God bless and keep you.

Dorothy you defied it all with your perseverance to go on through adversities, living a full and wonderful life. Instead of giving up, you gave back, and that is a blessing in itself. I know that you are looking down on us as you embrace your blessings in heaven. A true original, openhearted person who blessed us with laughter and candidness. My prayers are with your family as they miss your presence, but retain in their heart your spirit and celebration of life with our savior.

I worked with Dororthy for 20 years at BCBSLA. She was very interesting and I always enjoyed discussing various topics with Dorothy. She was a good person and completely dedicated to BCBSLA. Her family was very warm and kind. CJ was a great guy and her children were solid people which was a reflection of who Dorothy was as a person. She will be missed, but I know Dorothy is resting in peace next to her Lord and Savior! God Bless Dorothy Crocket!

My thoughts and prayers are with the family. Dottie was not only a devoted co-worker she was a friend. Never complained once about her health but, always found time to listen and encourage others. Because of Dottie Blue Cross is a better place. She devoted her time and knowledge to the company making sure all I's were dotted and T's crossed. We thank you Dottie for passing this way. The laughter and memories we shared will forever be in my heart. To her family I say "thank you" for lending Dottie to us for these past 38yrs. May god continue to bless and keep you is my prayer.

Mrs. Dorothy, your impact on my life can never be put into words. I am forever grateful for the friendship, guidance, and love that you provided to me-ALWAYS AND UNCONDITIONALLY! Your passing has left a sudden and deep void in my life, but I constantly hear your voice telling me, "You will be fine my dear." As you always did. I won't tell you to rest in peace, because I surely know that you are. You were an incredible human being and I was certainly BLESSED to have been able to call you FRIEND. I will never forget you, but will always think of you when I watch The Color Purple-you know why (SMILE). I love you my dear. We all loved you, but God loved you best, so take your rest. Shena.
