Shirley Mae Kandera Ackermann, born March 16, 1928, died in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, on January 6, 2013. A native of New Orleans, Louisiana and, following Hurricane Katrina, a resident of Diamondhead, Mississippi. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph P. and Ethel Schwander Kandera. Survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Herbert J. Ackermann, Jr.; her sister, Beverly K. Perez, of New Orleans, Louisiana; her son, Eric S. (Donna) Ackermann, of River Ridge, Louisiana; and her daughter, Karen A. (Wade) Hufft, of Diamondhead, Mississippi. Beloved grandmother of Tammy Hufft (A.J.) Gambino, Toni M. Hufft, Amanda L. Hufft, and Rebecca J. Ackermann; great-grandmother of Abigail Mae Duhon. Also survived by nephews, Bret T. (Donna) Ackermann and Bart M. (Toni) Ackermann, and niece, Darlene P. (Paul) Drendell. A homemaker and devoted wife and mother, she enjoyed square dancing and was a long time active member of Gold Dust Twirlers and Dixie Chain Square Dance Clubs. The family wishes to express its gratitude for the excellent care and attention provided to Mrs. Ackermann by the entire staff of The Courtyard at Dunbar Village; especially by her care giver, Linda; also, the staff of St. Joseph Hospice and Nurse Kathy for her care and comfort. Visitation will be held at Jacob Schoen and Son Funeral Home on Friday, January 11, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by Funeral Mass in the Chapel. Interment to follow at Hope Mausoleum.
