Suzanne Ferrell Obituary

Suzanne Haulard Ferrell, an extraordinary wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to many, began her final journey March 15, 2013, at the age of 71. She fought a brief battle against bile duct cancer bolstered by her family and friends, and the doctors, nurses and staff of the Tulane Abdominal Transplant Unit. A native of New Orleans and resident of Baton Rouge since 1966, she was affectionately known as ""Miss Sue"" by many, especially the students at Magnolia Wood Elementary School whom she served as a substitute teacher. She was a significant role model and surrogate mother to many in the neighborhood and around the world. Her love has made the world a better place. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Ray; four children, Ray Eric and wife Elizabeth Muenchinger, Nancy and husband Edward Hardin, Andrew and wife Christine Romain, and Benjamin and wife Aimee Bergeron; a dozen fabulous grandchildren, Anna, Eric, David, Caroline, Brendan, Benjamin, Patrick, Edouard, Sarah, Timothy, Julia, and Nicholas; brother E. Richard Haulard and wife Janice; brother-in-law Pat Ferrell and wife Jovita; cousin and ""sister"" Carolyn Martin Levy; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. She is the daughter of the departed Edith M. Jablonowski and Alexander J. Haulard of New Orleans. Her older brother, Alexander J. Haulard, Jr., waits for her in Heaven. Suzanne graduated from St. Mary's Dominican High School and Louisiana State University in New Orleans. Visitation at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 2025 Stuart Ave, on Tuesday, March 19 beginning at 9 a.m. will be followed by a funeral mass celebrated by the Very Rev. John S. Hardin, O.F.M., at 11 a.m. All are invited to a special celebration of her life that will take place after the church services at 412 Albert Hart Dr. ""The more – The merrier!"" would please Sue. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are invited to the charity of your choice, the Hospice Foundation of Baton Rouge, or Our Lady of the Lake Children's Hospital Foundation in Baton Rouge.

Not sure what to say?

Ray,

I was so very sorry to just learn of your mother's passing. There are no words to comfort you I'm sure but please know that you and your family are in my thoughts and prayers. I know by reading all of these entries that your mom was a very special and extraordinary woman. I can only hope that you will be comforted by the wonderful memories of her that you keep in your heart.

I met Sue while working at Magnolia Woods Elementary. She always had so many wonderful stories to tell about her family and the adventures she took with her husband. She will be deeply missed.

Sue and the family have been part of my life since 1979 when we traveled to the Grand Canyon together and they became my family away from home. Field trips, led to invites to family gatherings, led to LSU field camp where I met Sandy and they continued to keep their arms around us. The family traveled to Florida to come to our wedding (pic: A smile in time) and both my Mom's met in 1984. My mom then knew why Sue was also a Mom. The 90's led to backyard crawfish boils, Elizabethan dinners, graduate school with Dr. Ferrell, and continued a revolvement around being near the family. She always kept in touch and made us feel like she wasn't far away. I'll miss her poems about travels, trials, and events, but mostly I'll miss her and will always remember her open arms and heart. Love to all the family, kids, and grandkids.

It is hard to believe Miss Sue is no longer here. I'm so happy I was able to see her and say goodbye and to spend time with her very loving family. She lived her life more fully than anyone I've ever met, and I have no doubt she continues to wear her big smile up there in Heaven. I think her adorable grand-daughter Sarah grabbed some TP from her hospice room and said she'd continue the tradition. ;-) Love to all the Ferrells, Hardins & Haulards!

We will always cherish the memories of Mrs. Ferrell's spirited cheers on the sidelines of the Blades and Apollos soccer games, among other Baton Rouge soccer franchises she helped developed! We extend our deep admiration for her friendship and fun-loving attitude as, literrally, one of Baton Rouge's first Soccer Mom's in the early 70's -- well before that term even existed. Of course as a wife and grandmother we know she will be greaty missed and extend our sincerest condolences to Mr. Ferrell and the entire family. I was so fortunate to see Ben yesterday at the Burbank soccer fields and saw in his eyes just how Sue's spirit carries on.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all the Ferrell's during this time.

I remember Sue knew that I liked drinking tea and she would drink coffee. We would sit in the kitchen and eat her homemade biscotti sometimes. She loved the Royal family in England and had a collection. It was nice just chatting away... I will remember the good times.

Andy and Family,
My sincerest condolences for your loss! I can see the pictures on the wall and squares of TP as if it was yesterday. She lived, loved and laughed - a remarkable role model for all! My prayers are with you!

Such a lovely lady with an infectious smile! I know that you'll carry sweet memories of her in your hearts forever. Do tell me though--Were there any outhouses at the funeral? (Smile) Keep the faith and know that you are loved as many prayers from Natchitoches go up on behalf of your family.

We met Sue and Ray (and teenagers Andy and Ben) during their sabbatical in Bern, Switzerland. As a newly-wed and recently supplanted from Canada, I was keenly homesick. Sue's warmth, open-door policy and many shared meals helped to alleviate that. What our daughters remember is Sue's toilet paper collection. Olivia recalls being 6 years of age and fascinated by Sue's outhouse earrings -complete with little people inside. Sue didn't only collect toilet paper but had an amazing and genuine gift for collecting and keeping friends from all over the world. Ray, you have so many wonderful memories of Sue to carry with you. All our sympathy to you and all of the family.

I was so saddened to hear about Suzanne. I sent a card with Masses for healing in the morning, only to learn that she passed away at noon the same day. She played such a vital role in making our Dominican 50 year reunion such a success. God bless all of you with many happy memories of Sue.

Sue and I met as young Mums at the school gates in Sheffield, England in 1975. It was the start of a deep and loving friendship between our families. Letters, emails and telephone chats kept us close between visits.
Sue was such a special friend, so generous, kind and caring. Her home was filled with love and happiness.
Our deepest sympathy to Ray and all the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

There isn't enough room in this little box to contain all of the memories I have that include "Miss" Sue and all of the 6-F's. "Miss" Sue was always there 24/7 without hesitation. I don't remember not knowing her, and Maxine Drive will never be the same without her. I will miss her unique "hello" on the phone, her hospitality, and her warmth and friendship to me and my family. God speed dear lady. My prayers will be for peace and grace for your family and many friends world-wide. Much love and many thanks.

My deepest sympathy and prayers are with the Ferrell family.
Sue was a unique person, always vibrant, outgoing and helpful. I first met Sue when my daughter attended Magnolia Woods. Later, I realized I had known of Sue's Dad Alex since my high school days in Rosaryville where Sue's aunt, Sister Mary Aimee Haulard, had been my Aspiranture Mistress, and, later, my Prioress at Dominican College. (I first loved Sr. M. Aimee as my third grade teacher at St. Agnes in Baton Rouge.
As I keep Sr. M. Aimee picture at my bedside and think of her often so will I remember and pray for Sue.

I am deeply saddened by the passing of Ms. Sue. As a former student of Dr. Ray, I am well aware of the closeness and bond between the two of them. My heart aches as a result of this passing. Dr. Ray had been my mentor for years and during all of my professional development activities Ms. Sue was always there for support and a kind word. She took such good care of our cohort during Summer of 2006 at the Geology Field Camp in Colorado Springs, CO. She had this way of making you feel welcome and secure. I am a better person, teacher and doctoral student as a result of knowing both Dr. Ray and Ms. Sue. Dr. Ray I will continue to keep your family in my prayers. I'll end with one of my famous quotes that summarizes my feeling about the Rays, "If a man is to shed the light of the sun upon other men,
he must first of all have it within himself."

I know God is wondering if this new angel in heaven will every stop talking! Sue was sincere, honest, and most often had something to say about everything. I will indeed miss our afternoon chats over coffee, sharing recipes and sewing patterns, but most of all I will miss the warmth of her smile. Sue was the first neighbor I met when we moved onto Maxine Drive and we remained friends for over 43 years. I have been blessed to have known her and to call her my friend.

I went to Dominican High School with Sue and knew her to be a very friendly, energetic person. After High School I lost touch with her, but revived our friendship with the 50 year reunion of our Dominican class. She did so much to make that reunion so very special. I then kept in contact with her and read all of the emails describing her travels. She was a remarkable woman. I was so sorry to hear of her death. Sue and her family are in my prayers.
