Henry Oppenheim passed away at home on Monday, April 15, 2013, at 5:50 a.m. He was the son of the late Hugo and Hertha Oppenheim. Mr. Oppenheim was born in Germany and at the age of 14 was separated from his family and emigrated alone, as part of a children's transport in 1937 to New York City. He was taken into the family of Maurice P. Davidson, former commissioner of water, gas and electricity of New York City. He was reunited with his parents and brother in 1940 in New Orleans, Louisiana, where he maintained his residence until 2005 when Hurricane Katrina was responsible for his moving to Covington, Louisiana. He graduated from Fortier High School in 1941. During World War II, he was the foreman for a subcontractor for Higgans Industry, supplying plywood panels used in the building of landing craft and torpedo boats. In 1946, with his father and cousin, he formed the Southern Manhattan Textile Company which later was changed to the Southern Manhattan Infant Wear Company. In 1949, the company became known as Cute Togs of New Orleans, Inc., a prominent leading manufacturer of national brand children's wear with distribution to department stores and leading chain stores. In 1972, after the death of his father, he became Chief Executive Officer and President of the company. In 1984, he became an associate of Fairytale Infant Wear Company of New York City. He retired in December 1993. He is survived by his wife, Delores Gomez Oppenheim, one brother, Gerd Oppenheim, numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins and other relatives. A Memorial Funeral Service was held in the Chapel of Lake Lawn Metairie Funeral Home on April 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A private burial service will be held later for the immediate family only.
