Jack Groner Obituary

A native of New Orleans and resident of Baton Rouge, Jack passed away peacefully at his home on Friday, July 19, at the age of 75. Preceded in death by his parents, Edward "Dutch" Groner and Mary Elizabeth O'Leary Groner, both of New Orleans. Survived by sister, Ruth Groner Werfel, of Pacifica, California. He is also survived by his wife, Mildred "Millie" Fagan Groner, daughter, Elizabeth Groner Hill and son-in-law, George Hill of West Baton Rouge; daughter, Elaine Wyatt Groner of Baton Rouge; daughter, Jodee Groner Troup and son-in-law, Peter Troup of New Orleans; and son Jack Edward Groner and daughter-in-law, Angela Groner of Mandeville; four grandchildren, Joseph "Joey" Edward Groner, Jack Ramsey Groner, Ava Gofton Troup, and Vivienne Wyatt Groner. He graduated from Metairie Park Country Day School in New Orleans and attended Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Virginia, where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities. He was quarterback and captain of the Washington & Lee General's football team and voted first team All-American. Several school passing records that he set still stand to this day. He was then drafted by the New York Titans (presently the New York Jets) but decided to pursue a legal career instead. He graduated from Tulane University Law School and began working at Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Louisiana and eventually became General Counsel. He then retired from Blue Cross/Blue Shield after 38 years of employment. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Baton Rouge, Baton Rouge Rotary Club and various social clubs in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and thoroughly enjoyed the outdoors. The focus of his life was loving his family and friends. He loved the Lord and is with Him now. It gives his family great joy to know they will be re-united with him someday so they can listen to his funny jokes and once again enjoy his exuberance for life. Visitation will be held Saturday, July 27, from 11:00am until 1:00pm at the home of Sean and Shannon Fagan, 7877 Settlers Circle, Baton Rouge. Inurnment will follow at 3:00pm at Lake Lawn Metairie Cemetery, 5100 Pontchartrain Blvd, New Orleans. Donations may be made to the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, 1 Billy Graham Parkway, Charlotte, NC 28201.

Dear Millie, Elizabeth, Elaine, Jodee, and Jack Jr.,
We are very sad for the loss of Jack. There is a saying that a man's character is shown by how he treats those who can not do anything for him. His kindness to us in the past twenty two years is testimony to the fact that Jack is a man of great character. We love him and will miss him very much.
