Albert Tircuit Obituary

Born on November 1, 1943, Al is survived by the love of his life of 50 years, Maxine Roe Tircuit; the pride of his life, sons, Kyle and Derek Tircuit; "his girls", daughters-in-law, Jodie Slinker (Kyle) and Tiffani LaBorde (Derek); "his heart", granddaughter Shelby Diane Tircuit; sister, Jenny Lind Tircuit David, and husband Rusty David; sister-in-law, Marlene Roe Langlois, and husband David Langlois; brother-in-law, Eugene Roe and wife, Betty Roe, along with numerous nieces and nephews. Al was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard and Genevieve Grass Tircuit; brother, Leonard G. Tircuit, father-in-law, Eugene Roe Sr., mother-in-law, Vera Roe, and nephew, Travis David. Al was a member of Blackwater United Methodist Church and attended Jefferson United Methodist Church, and on Tuesday, July 30, Al met the Lord wearing one of his beloved Tulane t-shirts. Al graduated Baton Rouge High School, class of 1963, and attended LSU. Al was a veteran of the Army National Guard. Al enjoyed spending his time as an LSU Marshall for football and softball games. He was a member of The Louisiana Sportswriters Association, Baton Rouge Kids Baseball Clinic, LA State Retirees Association, Cubs Scouts, Baton Rouge High School Alumni Association, Math Club, Tulane Backers, and North BR Alumni. Although he retired from the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development in 1994, he never stopped pursing his passion, being a sportswriter. For the past 50 years, Al covered all sports--primarily high school. He wrote for the Catholic Commentator, The Baker Observer, The Advocate, and The Denham Springs News. His writings earned him many awards from various sports writing associations. Among Al's favorite recollections of his sports writing career was watching the 1978 Independence bowl in Shreveport with John Wayne. His friends and family recognize his efforts to enable the July 20, 1969 NASA moon landing by actually putting it up there so they could fly to it. Visitation will be held Friday, August 2, 2013 at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, LA 70816 from 5 pm until 8 pm and will continue Saturday, August 3, 2013 from 9 am until funeral service at 11 am conducted by the Rev. Michi Head. Interment will follow at Blackwater United Methodist Cemetery, 10000 Blackwater Rd., Baker, LA 70714. Pallbearers will be Jason David, Ryan David, Jereme Grass, Craig Huval, Christopher Langlois and Sam Muffoletto. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to Jefferson United Methodist Church, 10328 Jefferson Hwy., Baton Rouge, LA 70809, or Blackwater United Methodist Church, 10000 Blackwater Rd., Baker, LA 70714. Alternatively, you could also purchase a hat or T-shirt from the Tulane Athletics Gift shop. We're pretty sure they lost their biggest customer. Ms. Maxine, Derek, Kyle and family:

I was so saddened to just now hear of your loss. Mr. Al was a very, very special person. When I reflect back on the conversations I had with him during my teenage years, I recall the sense of joy with which he lived his life and the way those encounters made me feel just a little more special as a person. We all know how much he loved his sports, but what he conveyed to those around him made it clear that the true source of his joy was something much bigger; specifically, his faith and his love for each of you. I hope you can take comfort in knowing that at this very moment he is experiencing the absolute fullness of that joy and also comfort in the memories of the many years God gifted you with such a wonderful husband, father and friend.

I was so shocked when I got the phone call that Mr. Al had passed away. He was my "elevator" partner for all the LSU Home games. We worked the Press Elevator together. He always had a smile on his face and that laugh of his was like no other. I will miss him. My thoughts and prayers are with the Tircuit family.

My husband worked with Al for many years at the DOTD. We met him often at sporting events around town, as our children were growing up. We last saw him in May at an LSU softball game. Al's loss will leave a gaping emptiness in this community, as well as in his family. What a truly loving, caring, man. He lived his life according to the "Golden Rule," always smiling, always enjoying the company of those around him. He will be missed! Know we are keeping your family in our prayers & thoughts. May God keep you in his arms as you go through this most difficult time. How blessed we all were to have known Al!

I was sorry to read about Mr. Al Tircuit's passing in the sports section of today's paper. I went to Glen Oaks with his son Kyle and Mr. Tircuit was always very nice to me in high school. I have good memories of him covering many of our football games for The Advocate. He would often stop for a few minutes before or after games on his way to or from the press box and offer encouragement. I also played baseball for several years with his nephew Travis and Mr. Tircuit attended many of our school and summer league games. I remember him having a good knowledge of athletics in general, understanding their place at the high school level, and being kind and respectful to everyone around him.

Sincere condolences to the Tircuit family.

Uncle Al and Aunt Maxine are such a big part of my life. I have so many good memories and funny stories to be thankful for. He was a beloved figure in the prep sportswriter arena, and helped me get involved with the newspaper during high school football season for over 10 years. I went all over south Louisiana and met a LOT of people during those years and not one of them had anything but good and kind words to say about Al. I'll miss the way he would tell stories about our colorful family history and the old days in Plaquemine and have you laughing with him before he was done. Jen and I are keeping y'all in our prayers Aunt Mac and crew. Love always, Jason and Jennifer David

Al, Prudy Many, Johnny Meeks and I were high school buddies who shared many happy times together as close friends. It is difficult to think of Al no longer being with us, the first of the foursome to depart. For 50 years there was a strong bond of friendship despite the 1000's of miles that separated us and the few opportunities we had to see one another, but the shock of his loss hit me like a ton of bricks and therefore I cannot imagine how difficult this time of loss must be for Maxine and her boys and their families. My wife Ann and I extend our heartfelt sympathies to all the friends and family of this gentle giant of a man who I will always remember as one of my best friends for life. I will remember Al, his smile, his caring, his joyful way of living his life to the fullest. May he rest in eternal peace and may his family cherish the memories he has left for them with his grandchildren and great grandchildren...he was a man who deserves to have his life celebrated not only with tears, but with laughter, smiles, and hugs all around. I wish I could be there with all of you to share in this great celebration of the life of a man I loved like a brother.

Maxine, Kyle, & Derek.........Al was such a special friend and will be missed by all who knew him. Don and I will have to fly a "Tulane" banner at our tailgate tent in his memory. And, just to let you know the cost of the banner will be significantly less than the cost to feed him each Saturday. Our prayers are will all of you......Robert
