Robert Kleinpeter Obituary

A life long resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, died at Baton Rouge General Hospital - Bluebonnet on May 18, 2013. He was born on September 28, 1924, the son of George Buffington Kleinpeter, Sr. and Ethel McDaniel. He was a graduate of Istrouma High School. His studies at LSU were interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the Army Air Corps in the Aleutians, India, China and South Pacific theaters, flying bombing missions as a tail gunner. Returning home after the war, he completed his undergraduate studies at LSU and received his law degree in 1950 from the LSU Law Center. While in law school he was a member of Phi Delta Phi Legal Fraternity and editor of the Law Review. After graduation from law school, he became employed by the F.B.I. as a special agent and after graduation from the F.B.I. Academy in Quantico, Virginia, he was assigned to the Los Angeles Field Office where he received a number of commendations for field work. During this tenure, he married his wife of 62 years, Rachel Williams Kleinpeter. In 1952, they returned to Baton Rouge to raise their family. Buck began the private practice of law in 1952 in Baton Rouge and he continued to practice until 2007. He and Rachel had two children Melanie Anne Kleinpeter and Robert Loren Kleinpeter, both of whom followed him into law and practiced law with him during his legal career. He was very active in service of the legal field, outside of his trial practice. Buck was a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers, a Sustaining Member of the American Judicature Society, a longtime Member International Association of Defense Counsel, the Defense Research Institute and National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys. He served on the Advisory Committee of Louisiana Law Institute for Revision of Code of Criminal Procedure, was a member of the Permanent Committee for the Continuous Revision of the Code of Criminal Procedure, Louisiana Law Institute. Early in his legal career, he served as a member of the Law Reform Committee of the Louisiana State Bar Association, served for seven years on the Continued Legal Education Committee, and as its Chairman for three years. He was Chairman of the Junior Bar Section, and served on the LSBA Board of Governors for two years. For many years he was an Adjunct Professor of Law, Louisiana State University Law School, Criminal Procedure; Criminal Law; Trial Practice; He was admitted to practice in all Louisiana Courts, Eastern, Western and Middle Districts of the Federal Courts of Louisiana, U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals, U.S. Supreme Court, and U.S. Board of Immigration Appeals. He was a charter member of Broadmoor Baptist Church. He was a Life Member of Nicholson Post No. 38, American Legion, where he served on the Executive Committee and Legal Committee for 12 years. He received his Entered Apprentice, Fellow Craft, and Master Mason Degrees, at Istrouma Lodge No. 414, F. & A.M. 1946. Afterwards he was a Charter Member of Fairfields Lodge No. 425, F. & A.M., where he was a Past Master. Buck served the Grand Lodge of the State of Louisiana, F. & A.M. as Grand Senior Deacon (1975), Grand Attorney (1975, 1976, 1977, 1978 and 1979), Grand Junior Warden (1977), Grand Senior Warden (1978), Deputy Grand Master (1979) and Grand Master (1980). Other Masonic affiliations included Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Valley of Baton Rouge, Orient of Louisiana; 33°; LG.H., Past President, Louisiana Scottish Rite Foundation; Washington Chapter No. 57, R.A.M.; Lambert Council No. 22, R. & S.M.; Plains Commandery No. 11, Knights Templar; A.A.O.N.M.S.; Member of St. Paul Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine, Charter Member Acacia Temple A.A.O.N.M.S. where he was a Past Potentate. Buck was an Honorary Member of the Maritime Square Club of New Orleans and was a recipient of the Legion of Honor from the International Order of De Molay. He was a member of the Baton Rouge Rotary Club for many years and was a Paul Harris Fellow. He served on the boards of Girl Scouts of America, Junior Achievement, and the Istrouma Area Council Boy Scouts of America. Preceded in death by his parents, George Buffington Kleinpeter, Sr., and Ethel McDaniel a brother, George B. Kleinpeter, Jr., and a grandson, Christopher Cooper Hubbs. Survived by his wife, Rachel Williams Kleinpeter, children Melanie Kleinpeter Hubbs and R. Loren Kleinpeter along with their respective spouses, David Hubbs, M.D. and Ashley Ward Kleinpeter. He was also survived by grandchildren, Clayton Kleinpeter, M.DS., Alden Kleinpeter Magee, Regan Kleinpeter, Peter Hubbs, Brett Hubbs, Brandyi Hubbs Kyzar and four great-grandchildren, Adler Magee. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, May 21 at Resthaven Funeral Home, 11817 Jefferson Hwy., from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., with Masonic Services at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will resume on Wednesday May 22 at 9:00 a.m. until funeral services at 10:00 a.m. Interment will be in Resthaven Gardens of Memory. Pallbearers will be Mackie Price, Doug Miller, Bob Kleinpeter, Peter Hubbs, Brett Hubbs and Will Magee. The family expresses its appreciation to the staff in the Cardiac ICU at BR General Bluebonnet: Lacy, Amanda, Jeremy, Matt, Darrell and Chaplain Bruce Worrel as well as Drs. Helmke, Moonan, Moraes, Godtke, Culotta and Minsky. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Shriner's Hospitals for Crippled Children or a charity of your choice.
