Walter Broussard Obituary

Walter Charles Broussard was born on March 3, 1924, in Loreauville, LA, and passed away at the War Veterans' Home in Jackson, LA, on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at the age of 89. He was a long-time resident of Plaquemine, LA. He proudly served his country in the U. S Army during World War II, achieving the rank of staff sergeant with 4 stripes. During the war, he was stationed in Australia, New Guinea, and the Philippines. He received the Asiatic Pacific Campaign medal with three bronze stars, the Good Conduct medal, a Philippine Liberation ribbon with one bronze star, and a World War II Victory medal. After being honorably discharged, he worked for the Corps of Engineers as a lockman at the Plaquemine Locks, and he retired after serving for many years as lockmaster at the Bayou Sorrell Locks. He had a "green thumb" and took great pride in raising a vegetable garden and fruit trees, and he loved sharing his produce with others. Services will be held at Wilbert Funeral Home in Plaquemine on Tuesday, June 25th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and again on Wednesday, June 26th from 9 a.m. until religious services at 11 a.m. conducted by Pastor Danny LeBlanc. Entombment will follow at Grace Memorial Park Mausoleum. Survivors include his two sons: Wayne Broussard and Cheryl and Ryan Broussard and wife Martha; his two daughters: Edna Broussard Parnell and husband "Buddy" and Sybil Broussard Wisdom and husband Glenn; six grandchildren: Brad Broussard and wife Melissa and Bret Broussard, along with the boys' mother Marcia Rivet Broussard, Jason Wisdom, Gretchen Marino and husband Josh, Keegan Wisdom and wife Sara, and Noelie Broussard; nine great-grandchildren: Kayden, Konner, and Kayleigh Broussard, Evan and Austin Wisdom, Kenli and Kade Marino, and Brianna and Lucas Wisdom. He is also survived by six step-children, all of whom he considered his own: Emery Broussard, Judy B. Medlen and husband Charles, Robert "Bull" Fontenot and wife Donna, Rusty Fontenot and wife Angel, Richie Fontenot, Sr. and wife Donna, and Rhett Fontenot; and eleven step-grandchildren: Melissa Troxell and husband George, Wendy Broussard, Chris Broussard and wife Windy, Brandi Carroll and husband Rich, Hunter Medlen, Alissa Carpenter and husband Justin, Katherine Blanchard and husband Justin, Kristen Canella and husband Travis, John Fontenot, Richie Fontenot, Jr., and Jarret Fontenot; and eight step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Jeraldine "Gerry" Verret Broussard; his parents, Bertin and Edna Broussard; his sisters, Martha Darden and Esther Vilcan; and his nephews, Harold and Ralph Darden. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brad and Bret Broussard, Keegan Wisdom, John Fontenot, Richie Fontenot, Jr., and Jarret Fontenot. His children would like to thank the entire staff at the War Veterans' Home in Jackson for taking such loving and affectionate care of their father. He felt blessed and thankful to have spent the last 2½ years of his life there because of the special attention he received from all of his caregivers. They would also like to extend a very special thanks to Kathleen and the staff of Hospice in His Care for their compassion and concern during his bout with cancer. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Walter's name to Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center, 4950 Essen Lane, Baton Rouge, LA 70809.
