Harold Dellinger Obituary

Barry Dellinger, a native of North Carolina and resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away after battling ALS on March 9, 2016, at his home surrounded by those he loved most, his wife and daughter, and future son-in-law, Alex Aydell. He was 66 years old. He married Lynda Donnelly Dellinger in 1976 and they had one child, Carrie Barrett Dellinger. He leaves precious and loving memories to be cherished by both his wife and daughter along with his many students. Barry was born in Charlotte, NC, the only son of Margaret Elizabeth Barrett Dellinger and Harold Gray Dellinger. He went to high school at Anson High and graduated in 1967. He went on to earn his B.S. at University of North Carolina and his PhD in Physical Chemistry at Florida State University. While at FSU he also served in the USAF. He received many prestigious awards, most recently the ACS Award for Creative Sciences and an NIEHS grant awarded which allowed him to found the LSU Superfund Research Center, his lifelong dream. He taught Chemistry at LSU for seventeen years and held the Patrick F. Taylor Endowed Chair for Environmental Chemistry. He had a profound impact on the students, who to this day esteem him as a father. He loved to travel and was allowed to visit many countries and states because of his scientific knowledge. Those who knew him adored him. His wit was only surpassed by his kindness, love for family, and North Carolina basketball. He will be sorely missed. Visitation will be Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at Rabenhorst Funeral Home Downtown, 825 Government St., from 5:00 PM until a funeral service at 7:00 PM. He will then be buried in his home state of North Carolina. Our thanks go out to Feliciana Home Health, Bridgeway Hospice, ALS Association, the VA-NOLA-ALS clinic, his students and close colleagues. Please consider a donation to help fight ALS. Condolences can be offered at www.rabenhorst.com.

Professor Barry Dellinger had been a renowned scientist in the area of Physical/Environmental Chemistry. His contribution in the LSU Superfund Research is remarkable. It is easy for one to get vast understanding of complex issues on particulate matter and EPFRs through his research papers and publications.
I am privileged to have had a great opportunity of joining his group in 2009 -2013. Dr. Barry as my supervisor and mentor has had a profound impact on my life. I am grateful for his time, guidance, and constructive suggestions. Though his demise is inconceivable, I'll forever be indebted to him for shaping my career and destiny. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

It is still a shock to know your leave. I just can't believe you are not in office anymore. I know it is a loss to your wife Lynda and daughter Carrie, but it is also a loss to many people who love you and the field of science. You are one of the most brilliant professor and scientist I ever met. It is my honor to be your student to grow in both career and life. I wish you had a painless life in other side. RIP

Barry, I am sorry that I was not able to meet you. I would have loved to visit you at home with your family of people, and, your family of cats and dogs. If I were lucky, Lynda might have made one of her famous key lime pies. I would want you to tell me the story about CeCe, and, how you figured out the
anti-venom combo of ingredients that saved the life
of the family's beloved dog.
Everyone writes that you were
a sweet man, Sweet and brilliant ! An impressive combination. Your pain is gone now. RIP
