Charles Richard Egedy Jr., Ph.D.

Charles Egedy Obituary

Charlie left this world on Friday, March 15, 2013, and he will be sorely missed. He was born on October 31, 1950 in Philadelphia, PA to Charles and Betty Egedy. His sister Carol joined the family in 1952. They lived in several places, but Charlie finally found his home in Baton Rouge at LSU in 1968. He completed his B.S. in Chemistry in 1972. In 1974, he and Karen Summerell married and he began his career in the lab at Grant Chemical Division of Ferro Corporation. During that time, he became the Director of Research and Development, completed his M.S. in Chemical Engineering, began teaching part-time in the LSU Department of Mathematics and welcomed a daughter, Lauren, and son, Brian, to his family. After leaving Grant in 1999, he became a full-time Math Instructor at LSU. After several years, he returned to LSU Graduate School and completed his Ph.D. in Mathematics in 2009. He returned to his dream job, doing Math research and teaching Math at LSU, until he suffered a fatal heart attack while walking around the LSU lakes. Charlie played many different roles: long-time member and tournament director of the Baton Rouge Chess Club; long-time member and recently President of the Louisiana State Poetry Society; enthusiastic fan of LSU sports, baseball in particular; "Son" to Joyce; doting grandfather to Lauren's daughter, Kristin Byrd; "Dad" to Brian's wife Sarah; devoted mentor to LSU students of all ages and majors. A memorial service to celebrate Charlie's life will be held Thursday, May 2, 2013 on the LSU Campus in Lockett Hall, Basement Room 2, from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Immediately following the service, there will be a reception in the James E. Keisler Lounge, third floor Lockett. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to support the American Cancer Society Relay For Life.

Not sure what to say?

I was so saddened to hear of Charlie's sudden passing. I extend my deepest sympathies to his family. He was always an inspiration to me that it is never too late in life to pursue one's passion. I am glad I was able to reconnect if only briefly recently.

Karen, I am so sorry for your loss. I learned a lot from Charlie when I worked for him. I will always remember his words "measure everything you can." Those simple words have stuck with me and have served me well throughout my career. I now pass those simple words to the people working for me. Thank you Charile for everything you did for me.

I won't pretend to have known him extremely well, nor for very long, but he may have been the only reason I have a degree from LSU and am doing what I do for a living now.

He was an amazingly comforting individual for those of us who will always struggle to accomplish what we perceive to be unknowable.

The world has lost an amazing man from what I've seen written. I did not know him personally and am at a loss for not knowing him but I do wish the family peace at his passing. We can't choose to hate death as it is a part of life but I pray GOD holds everyones hands and gives them peace that only he can provide. I know this is a terribly sad time but if sister Carol reads this please feel free to contact me @ [email protected] condolences to all...Shar Everhart Brooks

Dr. Egedy's passion for math brought his teaching to a level I have seen in few other teachers. His excitement brought in students with poor attention spans such as myself and made the subject more interesting. I am blessed to have been taught in his class and I hope to bless him with my prayers.

Dr. Egedy was one of the greatest teachers I ever had. In the fall of 2010, I took a differential equations class with him and immediately felt his passion for the subject. He really challenged me to excel and do my very best! When it came time to get letters of recommendation for dental school, I knew exactly who I would ask to write mine, Dr. Egedy. We always talked about his office, the best location in the building :) and of course, his granddaughter. I will always remember him and thank him greatly for his time as a teacher, mentor, and friend. I am so very sorry for y'all's loss - your family and the entire LSU community lost a really great and passionate man.

Dear Karen, Lauren, and Brian--

Judy and I were saddened to hear of Charlie's passing. Having worked alongside of him for 25 years, he impressed me with his intelligence, diligence, and ability to communicate his knowledge. He was also very hospitable and accepting of others. He will be missed by his friends, students, and co-workers.

I have only the fondest memories of my friendship with Charlie. Centered around chess, we played games over the years, enjoyed tourneys together, meeting in coffee shops and bookstores to play and chat about chess, or work or math, finally sharing the joy of teaching at LSU. I will miss Charlie and offer my heartfelt condolences to Karen and the children.
