A longtime former Baker resident, and retired from Bellsouth with nearly 40 years of service, Bill died on Monday, May 20, 2013 at a Dallas, Texas hospital. He was 72, and a native of West Helena, Arkansas. He was a resident of The Colony, Texas, and a U.S. Marine Corps veteran. Visiting at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Road, Baker, on Thursday, May 23, 2013 from 5-9pm, and on Friday, May 24, 2013 from 8am until religious services in the chapel at 10am, conducted by Brother Vernon Welshans. Interment with military honors to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, Baker. Bill is survived by his wife of 47 years, Dixie Hanchey Irwin of The Colony, Texas; two daughters and a son-in-law, Jodi and Tim Davis of Baton Rouge, and LeAnne Johnston of The Colony, Texas; son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Shala Irwin of The Colony, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia Jerry Moore of New Orleans; brother, James Irwin of Tennessee; a brother-in-law, Arlie Hanchey and wife Sarah of Tupelo, Mississippi; nine grandchildren, Mason, Miranda, Andrew, Cody, Jordan, Joy, Ben, Cade, and Grace; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie and Ruby Irwin. Pallbearers are Billy Irwin, Arlie Hanchey, Cody Davis, and Mason, Andrew, and Jordan Johnston. Honorary pallbearer is Tim Davis. Bill was a Reserve Baker Police officer for 29 years, and a member of Cross Bend Christian Church in Plano, Texas. He was an avid LSU and Saints fan, and he enjoyed playing cards at The Colony Senior Center, where they had a standing poker game every Tuesday night. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Bill's name to Cross Bend Christian Church, 901 Cross Bend Road., Plano, Texas, 75023, or to The American Diabetes Association.
