A native of Baton Rouge, La. and a resident of Yulee, Florida, he passed away on April 22, 2013. He was 46 and was a graduate of Trafton Academy in Baton Rouge, La. Culinary Specialist First Class Randall Hopson enlisted in the United States Navy on March 16, 1995 and earned the rank of E6, Petty Officer First Class, on December 16, 2009. A qualified Submariner, he served onboard the Los Angeles class nuclear fast attack submarines USS INDIANAPOLIS (SSN 697) from 1995 to 1998, USS TUCSON (SSN 770) from 1998 to 2000, USS SAN JUAN (SSN 751) from 2003-2007, and the USS HELENA (SSN 725) from 2011 until his death on April 22, 2013 while forward deployed to the Mediterranean Sea. His unit awards include the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (2), the Meritorious Unit Commendation Medal (2), and the Navy Unit Commendation Medal. He was personally awarded the Navy Achievement Medal in 2009 for superior performance of his duties and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Throughout his 18 years of dedicated service to his country, Petty Officer Hopson exemplified the Navy core values of Honor, Courage and Commitment and will be sorely missed by his shipmates onboard the USS HELENA and across the United States Navy. He is survived by his loving wife, Janine Hopson of Yulee, Fla.; step-daughter and her husband, Heather and Thomas Reed; step-granddaughter, Aurora Reed; stepson, Jake Stovall of Tulsa,Okla.; parents, Herbert and Dorothy Hopson of Baton Rouge; siblings, Greg and wife Terri Hopson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Bobby and wife Kara Hopson of Denham Springs and Karen and husband Paul "Rocky" Beach of Baton Rouge; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at Resthaven Funeral Home, on Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and will resume on Monday, May 6, 2013 from 12 noon until religious service at 2 p.m. conducted by Charles Watson.
