J. Stein Obituary

J. Philip Stein passed away on May 9, 2013, of a sudden heart attack. A lover of all things New Orleans. He was born in Elizabeth, New Jersey to Jesse and Goldie Stein, who preceded him. Mr. Stein was 82 and retired. Mr. Stein was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin. Post graduation, He was stationed in New Orleans as an army recruiter during the Korean War and remained in the city until his death. Mr. Stein also graduated from Loyola Law School of New Orleans, and was a practicing attorney at Tulane and Broad Streets, where he was a fixture, until the end. During the course of his lifetime, Mr.Stein was a race horse owner, a co-founder of a CAD/CAM Computer Company, a co-owner of By-Water Hospital and an entrepreneur and business man. He enjoyed sailing, festivals, traveling, collecting friends and spending time with family. Mr. Stein was active in civic organizations, and served on numerous community boards during his lifetime. He was keenly interested and involved in politics, and had been a candidate for Traffic Court Judge. Mr. Stein is survived by his wife, Karen Glaser Stein, (whom he married twice); his son, Joshua Alan Stein; two step-daughters; Jamie Miller and Jordan Miller; his sister Roslyn Stein and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his sister Sylvia Stein Conrad. A private service was held for family at Temple Sinai Synagogue. In celebration of Mr. Stein's life, for all family and friends, a memorial party will be held on June 12, 2013, at Benachi House and Gardens, 2257 Bayou Road, New Orleans, from 6:30-9:30 PM. Mr. Stein loved Jazz Fest, and the wearing of Jazz Fest shirts and attire is encouraged. Arrangements by Tharp-Sontheimer-Tharp, 1600 N. Causeway.
