Doris Coates Obituary

Doris was a resident of Baton Rouge and a native of Livingston Parish. She passed away Wednesday, July 3, 2013 at her son's home at age 99. Doris was a retired East Baton Rouge Parish school teacher having taught for 44 years. She received a BA degree from Southeastern Louisiana University and a M. Ed from Louisiana State University. She was a supervising teacher at L.S.U. having taught student teachers and was elected twice to represent the state in the Association of Teacher Educators on the national level. She often served as a presenter at educational conferences on the national level. A charter member of Sigma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa, she served as a past president. She was a member of the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association. Mrs. Coats served as a president of the L.S.U. College of Education Alumni Association. She was a member of University United Methodist Church. Doris is survived by her son, Roy Coats, daughter, Doris Dobson; three granddaughters, Lisa Dobson Noland, Caroline Dobson Barber and her husband Lee Barber, Mary Margaret Dobson Collier and her husband Richard Collier; and five great grandchildren, Mary Shaw, Rayne Elizabeth Barber, Buck Barber, Sarah Elisabeth Collier and Emma Lanier Collier. She is preceded in death by her husband, Roy M. Coats, Sr.; parents, Zach and Minnie Johnson; and a sister Althea Johnson. Visiting will be at University United Methodist Church, Saturday, July 6, 2013, from 12 noon until religious services at 1 pm conducted by the Rev. Larry Miller and the Rev. Colleen Bookter. A private interment will follow in Greenoaks Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be Roy Coats, Lee Barber, Richard Collier, and Buck Barber. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to University United Methodist Church, 3350 Dalrymple Drive, Baton Rouge, 70802.

Mrs. Coates was my first grade teacher at Magnolia Woods Elementary and I have always remembered her a my favorite teacher. She always had a beautiful smile on her face.
