Maxime "Max" Gerard LaBranche, Jr., a long-time resident of Baton Rouge, died on January 31, 2014 after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Plaquemine, Louisiana on December 23, 1941. Max attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge where he received undergraduate degrees in Geology and Zoology. In 1969, he graduated from LSU Law School where he was awarded the degree of Juris Doctor. He practiced law for over forty years during which time he formed the law firm of LaBranche and Lejeune. His greatest pleasure in the practice was helping the little man. Among many other organizations, Max served on the board of directors for the Spanish Town Mardi Gras Parade, was a member of the Pelican Yacht Club, the LSU Faculty Athletic Club, and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He spoke fluent Spanish. Max was known for his friendly and gracious manner which endeared him to all. He was blessed with a heart-felt interest in other people, witty intellect, and a remarkable recall of information. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty years, Teresa Roman LaBranche, two sons, Max G. LaBranche, III, Benjamin R. LaBranche, sister, Yvonne Lagasse, brother in law Elton Lagasse, and brother Guy LaBranche. The family will hold a private remembrance service. Memorials may be made to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank, 10600 S. Choctaw Dr., Baton Rouge, LA 70821.

I just learned on Saturday at the Spanish Town parade that Max had died. I was shocked. I clerked for Max and Mike back in 1986-87 during law school. Max was so jovial and warm hearted. My time there was such a welcome break from law school plus I gained invaluable experience.
My sympathies go out to his family.

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies to the LaBranche family for their loss. As a young lawyer fresh from LSU I had the honor and privilege to get to know Max and quickly found that he was one of the kindest, just and courageous attorneys that I have ever met. To me Max represents what every attorney should strive to become. God Bless.

Max not only was my best friend but above all he was a gentleman in the traditonal way. Honor, righteousness were not simple words but tenets under which to carry out our daily lifes.
Always defending the downtrodden.
I have known Max and his lovelly wife Teresa for over 40 years and became more than friends as we shared the love of latin music and a country called Venezuela where Teresa was born and I grew up. We also shared good eating, sailing and the Mardi Gras Spanish Town Parade.
I will miss him inmenselly.

I had been meaning to drop by the office, my normal way to keep in touch, for the past few months, and now it's too late.
We had met in about 1995 when I needed some legal advice. Fortunately, I was able to give him some medical advice pro bono concerning several clients. He is someone whom I had come to admire for his personal and professional integrity. He will be sorely missed by anyone whose life he has touched.

It has been very difficult for me to write this, I was shocked to hear that Max had died. I met Max my first semester in graduate school at LSU in 1965 and liked him immediately. He was also an LSU student then and would frequently come over to the Physics Department where I was a student and have wonderful discussions with his friends, and everyone was his friend. He was just full of fun and great to be around. This lasted his whole life. Whenever I would run into Max, we would visit and it always made my day better. Max and I were members of the FAC until the day it was closed. Max and Teresa hosted many FAC parties at their home and we always tried to make them. They were loads of fun and Max and Teresa were the perfect hosts.
I am very sad that Max died and will truly miss him.
Sincerely,
John M. Tyler

Max, truly one of a kind, saw me through many a rowdy Spanish Town Mardi Gras. While in exile in DC and Georgia I christened his internet clips-mostly bawdy- MAXGRAMs, and sent them around the world. We are forever grateful he helped our kids out of several tight spots. He is the tall ship and star that we should all steer by. The leader of the band has gone to the great cochon du lait in the sky.

Max was my hero from the moment I met him. He was so caring and kind, a man who truly loved his fellow man. Hard-working and passionate about helping people, I admired him more than I can even express in words. He really had a way of bringing out the best in people with his ever-present sense of humor and contagious enthusiasm. I will miss you so much! To his family: Teresa, whenever he talked about you his eyes would light up, he adored you. When he talked about his sons, he beamed with pride. I am so sorry for your loss.

I miss Max. He was one of my best friends and a delightful fishing buddy. I am still sorry the wind kept us from making it to the rigs on our last trip. Instead we ended up fishing the marsh and getting stuck on a mud/oyster bar. But he took that all in good spirits, although I am not sure he realized that if we did not get off soon we were going to spend the night there. It was a trip for me to remember him by.

Teresa: When I was remembering Max, I kept thinking of a quote from William Wordsworth, the famous English poet. He wrote: "That best portion of a good man's life, (Are) his little, nameless, unremembered acts, of kindness and of love." This describes Max perfectly. I, and indeed all of the FAC, will miss him dearly.

Susan and I were completely distressed to hear of Max's passing. He was more than a friend! He was a confidant, an excellent jogging/walking mate, our FAC float captain, our family attorney, as well as a general all-around bon vivant who loved life and lived it to the fullest! He will be sorely missed!

Our thoughts and prayers are with Max's family. I was saddened to learn of his passing. Max didn't know the meaning of 5 o'clock quitting time. He would work till 7 or 8 p.m. most nights. He loved practicing law as much as he loved the Pelican Yacht Club, Spanish Town Mardi Gras, Ya-Ya, playing piano, and running. He was a pletheora of information on all subjects. He was truly the working man and woman's lawyer. He loved his family and friends. Still have some great pictures of our annual office parties at the Pelican Yacht Club. Great times and great memories. His proudest moment was when he was Grand Marshall of Spanish Town Mardi Gras. I saw Max a couple of years ago in front of his house during the Fat Boy 5K. I worked for Max for 10 years. I can never thank him enough for giving me my start as a paralegal. THANK YOU MAX AND GOD BLESS YOU!!! REST IN PEACE. WE'RE ALL GONNA MISS YOU!!!
