Aletha Mazzoli Obituary

A native of Cortland, NY, former resident of Memphis, TN, Mrs. Mazzoli passed away on January 31, 2018, at 92 years of age. Her love for her former homes never dimmed, but Aletha considered Baton Rouge her true home. She's survived by her niece, Sharon Alama, a noted artist of Syracuse, NY; sister-in-law, Marjorie Alama, NY; two great-nieces, Robyn Alama Mroszczyk, CO; Megan Alama, MN; a nephew, Douglas Alama, NY. Mrs. Mazzoli was preceded in death by her parents, Michael J. Alama and Marion Aletha Collier Alama, NY; by her husband, Edward Mazzoli; a brother, Malcomb "Mac" Alama. Mrs. Mazzoli graduated from Cortland High School, then the Cadet Nurse Corps in Rochester, NY. She was a researcher at Cancer Research Institute, University of Tennessee, Memphis, TN. In Baton Rouge, her public service works included volunteer work in founding an adult literacy organization (Operation Upgrade, now Adult Literacy Advocates of Greater B.R.), and the Capitol Area Literacy Coalition; Advisor, Assistant Coordinator of Parkinson's Disease Support Group. She continued adult nursing throughout her life as volunteer and staff member: First United Methodist Church's Shepherd's Fold, Co-founder of Women's Hospital Foundation Cancer Detection Lab with Cary Dougherty, M.D. She was Opening Leader of Adult Day Care for Geriatric Assessment Center of General Health of Sterling Place. In addition to the love of her many pets, Mrs. Mazzoli was involved in Altrusa Club, Church Women United, League of Women Voters, Interfaith Federation of Greater B.R., Auxiliary to Certified Public Accountants, the Democratic Party, Animal Rescue Organizations, to name a few. She spent the last few months of her life at The Woodleigh of Baton Rouge. Many thanks to administrative persons, nurses, and staff members for good care. Also, many thanks to Hospice of Baton Rouge, and to many friends, and neighbors who assisted her. A Memorial Service will be held at The Unitarian Church, 8470 Goodwood Blvd., on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, at 2:00 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to The B.R. Area Parkinson's Disease Group, 2639 Live Oak Dr., Brusly, LA, 70719.
