Chandler Coates Whitley was born Dec. 12, 1946, in Baton Rouge, and died Sunday, July 21, 2013, at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center. She is survived by a son, Mark (Delia) Whitley; daughter, Patriece (Lonnie) Whitley-Brand; siblings, Aline Vaughn, Sedley (Jesse) Roach, Eugene (Bobbie) Coates, Suzan Lancaster, Leslie Coates, the Rev. Roderick J. Coates, S.S.J., and Matthew Poydras; half-brother, the Rev. Gregory Coates; half- sister, Tanga Valentine; grandchildren, Delmar, Alexandria, Roderick, Demarcus and Lonnie; aunt, Rosemary DeConge; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Preceded in death by her parents, Leander and Myrtle Coates; and brother, the Rev. Leander Coates Jr. Chandler was a 1964 graduate of McKinley Sr. High School and later graduated from Capital Area Nursing School. She retired from nursing after 34 years of service. She was a lifelong member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Visitation Friday, July 26, at 8 a.m., followed by a Rosary at 9 a.m., and Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. Interment in Southern Memorial Gardens. Arrangements entrusted to Desselle Funeral Home.
