Every year around Memorial Day I search the web for 1LT Christopher W. Barnett. I've done this for the past 14 years. I was in the M-1114 directly behind Chris' when he was KIA. He actually switched places with me just before we rolled outside ECP-7. So it should have been our Humvee that was hit. Who knows, Chris might have saved my life that day. I've struggled with that thought every day for the past 14 years. Chris just might have saved my life or the lives of one of the soldiers in our Humvee. Thank you for your humor and your kindness Chris. Thank you.

To Becka and Marriner I saw your posts in here and I hope you are doing well. We were the lucky ones...

To Judy Barnett I lost contact with you and hope this message finds you well.

This Memorial Day I will remember Chris. We had a group of kids that used to camp out behind Monticello many years ago. Chris was a part of the crew. We'd make camp fires, tell jokes and turn in to the the neighborhood misfits after dark. All good fun. I remember the first time I met him thinking how small he was. That thought didn't last long after his dry wit kicked in. Some of my fondest memories were spending time with Chris. I hadn't seen him in years. He was a great guy with a huge heart and the world is a smaller place without him in it. He is missed and thought of. Thank you for your service and sacrifice, Chris.

Lt. Barnett had the busiest and most dangerous job in our company. In the rough and gruff world of military deployment he was one of the few who always treated everyone with respect. I don't think I ever hear a mean or angry word escape his lips.

Watching CNN last night the American Hero popped up and there was Chris's name. I couldn't belive it.I met Chris when he was stationed in Germany. My husband was his squad leader. He used to spend a lot of time with us.The last time I saw him he took us to the airport when we were leaving to head to Fort Hood.He was one of the sweetest and funniest person I have ever met.Rest in peace,Chris.

The Wind on The Downs

“I like to think of you as brown and tall,
As strong and living as you used to be,
In khaki tunic, Sam Brown belt and all,
And standing there and laughing down at me.
Because they tell me, dear, that you are dead,
Because I can no longer see your face,
You have not died, it is not true, instead
You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe;
I hear you laughing as you used to do,
Yet loving all the things I think of you;
And knowing you are happy, should I grieve?
You follow and are watchful where I go.”

(Written by Marian Allen during World War l )

Two lines that I wish you to keep near your heart…….

“You seek adventure in some other place.
That you are round about me, I believe”

I did not know Christopher, but I am remembering
his service and sacrifice. He is my hero. !

The Other Side

i'm over on the other side
where life and death softly divide.
left my skin and bones behind
now i'm over on the other side.

can you feel me there with you?
my breath is gone but i'm not through.
loved you then and i still do
from over on the other side.

i can fly. really fly.
below the earth ... all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

it's good here on the other side.
the sweetest songs...the bluest skies.
thank you for the tears you cried
but it's good here on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth...all through the sky.
tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side

the world is smaller than a needle's eye.
where life and death softly divide.
when you leave your skin and bones behind
i'll be waiting on the other side.

i can fly. really fly. below the earth ... all through the sky.
go tell em all i did not die.
i'm just over on the other side.

If this person can stand in battle to ensure my freedom, then I will stand in grief with his/her family to honor him/her. For every fallen HERO there is a bright star that shines in the evening sky to remind us of the cherished gift we were given – even if for too short a time.
My heart breaks again as I sign yet another guest book of another courageous young soldier who gave their life so selflessly. I wish I never found myself in a position to have to sign another guest book for the rest of my life, but I promised LE RON A. WILSON (a dear friend KIA 7/6/07, 18yrs old) that neither he nor any like him would be forgotten and so I will continue until the day there is no longer the need.

I cannot believe two years have passed since Chris left us. We have managed to grieve and move past the pain, as he would have wanted. Always the jokster. We miss that about you Chris. I cannot remember a moment in my memory when you were not smiling, laughing, or making someone else do the same. We love you and miss you very much. But we are strong. And we will move on. But we will also remember...never forget. Love always.

Psalm 23

1

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not be in want.

2

He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters,

3

He restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

5

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.

6

Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

This is a verse that I have found to be comforting to me during my husbands death. Remember that when it seems that no one else is round, God is still there with you! And he will be your rock!

My daughter,McKaLyne, and I send our heartfelt sympathy for your loss! God Bless this warrior, God Bless those whom serve freedom's cause! They are our true HERO's!!!!

Dear Jody, Bob, and Amanda, and Jim. I am extremely sorry to hear of your loss. I last heard from Chris in early December when I received an email from him only a few weeks before his death. Chris and I served in the Army together in Colorado, where we were roommates for a short time. Chris was one of the finest soldiers I have ever known and was one of my best friends. While we had drifted apart, I always enjoyed the chance to catch up with him and enjoy his sense of humor. He even took the time to travel to my wedding and be one of my groomsman. Since we usually only spoke once or twice a year, it was only this week that I tried to send him an email and got it returned. I then discovered the horrible news. I am so sorry for your loss. I have lost one of my most valued friends. If there is anything I can do for any of you, please let me know. I would love to share stories of such a great friend. Thank you,

To the Family:

LT Barnett was my LT. He was more than that though, he was like my father, brother and friend. He taught RED Platoon how to survive, all through FT. HOOD, FT. IRWIN, and in IRAQ. Serving with him was the greatest honor I have ever had. On bad nights in IRAQ during patrols he would always come up to me and tell me that what we are doing is worth it. I wish he was still here as his presense comforted us and gave us the strength to carry on.

I never had the pleasure of meeting your son, but I would like to say that he is definitely a Hero. If it wasn't for him and the hundreds of thousands of men and women fighting this war, we would not be a Free America. I know he gave his life for me and for millions like me and I would like to thank Him and you his parents for all your courage. My heart and prayers go out to you at this time. Hopefully someday all the men and women will come home, safely if God permits it. I have a nephew in law in Iraq and I worry about him and his family and pray that he makes it home o.k. Extending my deepest sympathy. I did not know Christopher but he will forever be one of my Heros - a soldier gone home to be with the Lord. Rest in peace.

I am the aunt of Chris' longtime friend, Scott Ital. My husband and I, along with most of my family met Chris on two occasions. One was when he and Scott went canoeing with us about two years ago. Another time he went with our entire family to eat at Middendorf's. There was another time I spoke to him when he was working at a computer company. I am sorry I was not able to know Chris better. He was a very nice, warm individual that had a great sense of humor. I know that Scott thought the world of him and because of that I know he must have been 'one of the good guys'. I am truly sorry for your loss.

I had the pleasure and honor of working with Chris on the "web development team" at the Dept. of Transportation. I'll always remember him for his indefatigable smile that seemed to accompany him everywhere. He was the kind of person whom his company was always welcomed, his opinion was valued and his trustworthiness was unquestionable.

His “military stories” will always be remembered. Sometimes you were never quite sure if he was “pulling your leg” while telling them. Yet, based on my memory of the military, his stories sounded just crazy enough to be true. He had a knack for always finding something interesting to share with his co-workers, which would always be accompanied by his “grin”. His grin, of course, would seem to make the story that much funnier or unusual.

In our numerous discussions about the military, I was always glad that he was “on our side”, and grateful for his continued service.

Our hearts are heavy with regret for the loss of Chris. He was a truly remakable man, a good friend to our son Scott Ital and will be missed terribly. Our best memories are of a conoe float trip he took with our family several years ago. We will cherish all of these memories and keep you in our hearts and prayers.
