John Culotta Obituary

John Tilghman "Jack" Culotta, Sr. entered eternal rest on July 16, 2013, at the age of 55. He is survived by Eileen "Eny" Farrelly Culotta, his loving wife of 29 years; his children, Katie Culotta Cook (Thomas), Genny, Courtney, Emily, Melanie, and Jack Jr.; his mother, Ethel C. Culotta; siblings, Van (Mimi), Sam (Tricia), Trudy Culotta McGarvey (Charlie), and Mark (Leslie); and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by his father, Vincent Culotta, M.D., his sister and her husband Frances Culotta Schmeeckle (Fred), and his nephew, Trey Culotta. He was a native of New Orleans, grew up in Lake Terrace, and was a graduate of Jesuit High School (1976), Louisiana State University, and Loyola Law School. He met the love of his life in high school and they married in 1984. He worked tirelessly for others while giving his time and energy to many organizations. He was a past president of Metairie Country Club, a member of the ForeKids! Foundation, the St. Dominic Golf Committee, BNI, the Federal Bar Association, and Bridge House. He was an enthusiastic basketball coach for all of his children and many athletes throughout the city. A true athlete himself, he spent time running and playing golf with "Da 4-some." He successfully completed the Mardi Gras Marathon in 2003 and the Iron Man in 2009. A passionate attorney, he always gave 110% to his clients. With his charismatic personality, he never met a stranger and was always willing to help anyone in need. Jack celebrated life not only with his family but also with more friends than can be measured. He never stopped providing for his family, and stayed true to this statement: "The greatest legacy I leave is my children." Most of all, he was tremendously overjoyed with the love and a devotion of his high school sweetheart, who became his wife and the mother of his six children. Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 20th, at 10 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. at St. Dominic Church, 775 Harrison Ave., New Orleans. Interment will follow in Metairie Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the John T. Culotta, Sr. Family Education Fund, at any Capital One Bank location. Trudy, Sam and Mark, and Mrs. Culotta, my heart goes out to you all. It has been many years since F.W. Gregory, tennis matches, sleep overs on Perlita Drive, and the Cobblers Bench. Jack was always fun to be with. I will always remember his smile and caring ways. Even though we have not seen each other in years, I was thinking of you all
a couple of weeks ago when I drove through City Park, the Oak trees and where the tennis courts used to be. May G-d watch over the entire Culotta family and especially Jack.

It was a great shock to read of Jack's passing. I met him through the FBA and immediately was drawn to his personality. Jack was a force to be reckonned with at the same time he was kind and understanding. I wonder if he asked St. Peter when he entered the Pearly Gates, "So, where's my name tag?" Not that he really ever needed one, since people knew when Jack was in the room and who he was. My deepest sympathy to his family.

I first met Jack at Jesuit in 1972 - our lockers were near each other. We discussed the fact the his father was the doctor who delivered me. I last saw him at our JHS reunion in 2011 and, upon leaving, we brought that up again. He was as vibrant as ever. I didn't know him intimately - though we were in contact as recently as December - but there was a bond we shared. I am hurt by his loss.

I first met Jack at Jesuit in 1972 - our lockers were near each other. Our first conversation was about how his father was the doctor that delivered me. I last saw him - as vibrant as ever - at our JHS reunion in 2011 and, upon leaving, we again spoke of his father's role in my initial appearance on earth. I didn't know Jack intimately - though we were last in contact as recently as December - but there was a bond there that I will miss not being able to continue to share.

I was fortunate enough to begin Camp Sunshine as a counselor when both Jack and Eny were there. But I was truly blessed to continue going long enough to meet and get to know all five of their exceptional daughters. My only regret is that I was not there the past couple of years to meet Jack Jr. as well. If Jack's greatest legacy is his children then you have all made him very proud. I regret that I cannot be there tomorrow, but I pray that the Camp Sunshine/Starlite family will be there to support you. You are such a wonderful family and my prayers are with you all.
