Micheal F. Harrelson Obituary

A Memorial Service will be held for Micheal F. Harrelson on Thursday, April 3, 2014 at 2:00 pm at the First Presbyterian Church of Lafayette, LA. The Reverend Zach Sasser of Lafayette, LA and The Reverend Charles 'Chip' Blackshear of Corpus Christi, TX will officiate. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall at the church. A private inurnment will be held at the Lafayette Masonic Cemetery. Mike was born June 26, 1946 in El Dorado Springs, Missouri. He graduated from Lafayette High in 1964 and attended USL later known as ULL. He was a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving as a US Navy musician on the USS Forrestal, then later on the USS Essex and the USS Randolph. Mike was passionate about his music, enjoying playing in the Lafayette Concert Band, Acadiana Wind Symphony, Skyliners Big Band and the pit orchestra for the IPAL in New Iberia. Mike worked in the fields of commercial television and retail music. He was grateful to Raymond Goodrich for the opportunity to work with Lafayette Music family. His contagious personality would fill a room with laughter to all those around him. Mike was a Master Mason for twenty-five years. He was a member of Exemplar Lodge No. 471 and Hope Lodge No. 145. In addition to being a member of the York Rite, he recently became a member of the Scottish Rite in Baton Rouge. He was appointed as an Honorary Past Grand Commander of Grand Commandery of Louisiana Knights Templar, as well as the honor of being named Knight Commander of the Temple by the Grand Encampment KT of the USA. Mike is survived by his wife of forty years, Janet 'Jan' Johnstone Harrelson of Lafayette, LA; his mother-in-law, Marion Johnstone; three brothers, Thomas Carl Walsh, Jr., of Baton Rouge and his children, Thomas and Alex, Frank 'Rusty' Walsh and his wife Lisa of Portland, OR, and James 'Peewee' Walsh of New Orleans, LA and his children, Jason and Sarah Walsh; nephews, Reverend Chip Blackshear and his wife Leslie and their children, Michael and Robin of Portland, TX, Kenny Johnstone and his wife Kristine and their children, Christian and Luke of New Orleans, LA, Doug Blackshear and his wife Melissa and their children, William and Serenity of Indianapolis, IN, and Scott Johnstone of Lafayette, LA; brother-in-law, Ken Johnstone and his wife Gerry of Lafayette, LA and sister-in-law, Sue Blackshear and her husband Dave of Davidsonville, MD. He was preceded in death by his mother, R.B. and stepfather, Thomas Carl Walsh, Sr. of Slidell, LA and beloved aunt and uncle, Novella and Frank Price of Freeport, TX. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Knight Templar Eye Foundation, Inc 1000 East State Parkway, Suite One, Schaumburg, IL 60173, or to Hospice of Acadiana, Inc., 2600 Johnston Street, Suite 200, Lafayette, LA 70503-3240. The family appreciates the care which Hospice of Acadiana provided, especially Iggy Landry and Rose Lily. Their gratitude goes to Dr. Gene Brierre, Eric Buller, PA, and the staff of Louisiana Oncology Associates for helping them through their journey. They would like to also express their thankfulness to Dr. Daniel Carroll, Dr. Samuel Shuffler and Dr. Braham Daneshfar.
