Nell-Pape Williams Waring, M.D., one of the City's earliest female physicians, was born on September 17, 1927. She died peacefully in her sleep on October 20, 2012. A native New Orleanian, Dr. Waring was the daughter of Edna Ayraud of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, and Benjamin Joseph Williams of New Orleans. She attended Sacred Heart Academy (The Rosary) in New Orleans from kindergarten through high school and graduated in 1944. Classically educated, Dr. Waring traveled internationally as a young woman and spent a study year abroad in Edinburgh, Scotland. She also studied at Oxford, England. As an undergraduate, Dr. Waring spent two years at Rosemont College in Rosemont, Pennsylvania. She received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry and Zoology in 1947 from Louisiana State University. In 1947, Dr. Waring was accepted to the Tulane University School of Medicine. Nationally, she was among the first women to attend medical school. After graduating from medical school in 1951, Dr. Waring commenced residency training in pediatrics at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. There, in 1951, she met her future husband, William W. Waring, M.D., originally from Savannah, Georgia. At the time of their meeting Dr. William Waring was the Chief Resident of the pediatric residency program at Johns Hopkins University (the Harriet Lane Home). After a short engagement, in 1952 the couple was married at Holy Name of Jesus Church in New Orleans. Thereafter, Dr. Nell-Pape Waring temporarily discontinued her medical pursuits while she raised her family. Dr. Waring is survived by her five sons: William W. Waring, Jr., Benjamin Joseph Williams Waring, Antonio Johnston Waring, Peter Ayraud Waring and Patrick Houstoun Waring. All of her sons reside in the New Orleans area. In 1974, Dr. Waring returned to medicine and completed her second full year of residency training in pediatrics at Charity Hospital of New Orleans on the Tulane University service. Dr. Waring completed additional fellowship training in allergy/immunology at Tulane University Medical Center under John Salvaggio, M.D., a nationally-recognized expert in the field. She ultimately became board-certified in both pediatrics and allergy/immunology. During the ensuing years until her retirement following Hurricane Katrina Dr. Waring cared for thousands of area adults and children. She enjoyed extraordinarily close relationships with her patients. Dr. Waring was a tenacious and gifted diagnostician and persisted unrelentingly in her efforts to develop effective plans of care for her patients. She will be long and fondly remembered by her numerous patients and her many professional colleagues. Dr. Waring is also survived by eight grandchildren: William W. Waring, III, Anne Williams Waring, Eleanor Grace Waring, Nina Pape Waring, Antonio Johnston Waring, III, Elizabeth Dale Waring, Houstoun Gerard Waring, and Hayley Cecilia Waring. In addition, Dr. Waring is survived by two daughters-in-law: Alexia Gail Nazar Waring, originally of Toledo, Ohio, and Kathleen Vollenweider Waring, originally of Lafayette, Louisiana. During her professional career Dr. Waring also maintained numerous hospital medical staff relationships, belonged to many professional organizations, published or co-published many scholarly articles, and held numerous academic faculty appointments. Dr. Waring was also a Sustaining Member of the Junior League of New Orleans. She enjoyed a wide circle of personal friends. Above all, she was well known for her rich sense of humor. She relished the many ironies in life. Nell-Pape Waring was a devout Christian and, for many years, maintained a Catholic women's prayer group. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew her. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, October 25, 2012, commencing with visitation at 11:30 a.m. at LAKE LAWN METAIRIE FUNERAL HOME in New Orleans, Louisiana. Visitation will be immediately followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m. Burial at Metairie Cemetery will be at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers family and friends are requested to make a financial donation either to St. Augustine High School in New Orleans or Children's Hospital of New Orleans. Even when one encounters a special "one of a kind", always to be remembered, human being, and does so occasionally over time, an influencing mark can be left by that person.
Poignant insights always from a woman far too ahead of her time. A great role model for her grand-daughter, Ann, in particular, and for each of Nell-Pape's sons and grandchildren.
A hole in each of your lives, no doubt. My deep condolences.

I am saddened to read the passing of Dr.Nell-Pape Waring. Dr. Waring was my daughter's allergy specialist from birth until the devastation of Hurrican Katrina. Dr. Waring through her research found out all the things my daughter was allergic to and treated her on a continuous basis. She was so patient and explained every step of her treatment. Once we relocated, she was so kind to make sure all her records were sent to the new allergy specialist. My daughter is 10 years old now and because of Dr. Pape-Waring we know how to treat her allergies and live despite them. She was a true blessing to our family as I know she was to her own family. Your family is in our thoughts and in our prayers. Thank you for sharing Dr. Nell Pape-Waring.

I met Dr Waring in 1974 when she resumed her practice. I was her patient but she took care of me as if I were her daughter. Through the years I have thought of her often with great affection. She will be in my thoughts forever. I know the family takes comfort in knowing what she meant to so many. God Bless
