Susan Naomi Edkin "Sue" Burtner

Sue was born June 13, 1931 in Tulsa, OK to Eldon Paul Edkin and Naomi Minnis Edkin. She was a proud member of the Will Rogers High School 49ers class. Following graduation, she attended Tulsa University and Oklahoma A&M. She enjoyed the sisterhood in Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority while at Tulsa University. In 1951, she married Gerald "Jerry" Gene Burtner in a double wedding ceremony with her sister Ruth Edkin to Robert Pitcher. Sue and Jerry began their married life in San Antonio, TX at Lackland Air Force Base. They returned to Tulsa for two years before moving to Charleston, WV, where she served as a foster parent to several children and soon fulfilled her lifetime dream of becoming a mother to 2 children. Moves to Ashland, KY and New Orleans, LA followed before settling in Baton Rouge. In 1981, she joined her husband in opening their business, Power Cleaning Specialists, Inc., and continued to serve as secretary-treasurer until her illness in 2007. Her compassion for her friends, neighbors, co-workers and family was exemplified by the generous sacrifice of her time and acts of kindness. As time permitted, she enjoyed working in her garden, baking, sewing, reading, studying the stock market and traveling. She found joy in honest hard work, thriftiness, great conversation, a neat closet, delicious food, brightening a stranger's day, reunions in Tulsa, finding the perfect purse and shoes, Easter Sunday and a really great sale. She passed away peacefully on January 16th at the age of 81. She leaves behind a loving family and dear friends who supported her throughout. She is survived by her husband of 61 years, Gerald "Jerry" Gene Burtner; a daughter, Sally Ann Burtner Bourgeois and husband Doss, of Houston, TX; a son, Steven Paul Burtner and wife Margaret, of Watson, LA, a sister, Ruth Van Fossen, of Billings, MT, 5 grandchildren, William, Ashley and Cameron Burtner, Kady Bourgeois Van Hook, and husband James, and Jena Bourgeois Hogan and husband, Geoffrey; a great grandson, Dylan Moore; and numerous nieces and nephews.
