Billie Gwendolyn Stiles Featherston, a long-time resident of Baton Rouge, died on April 28, 2013 in Corsicana, Texas. She was born July 6, 1925, in Pursley, Texas, a community of farming, ranching, and oil and gas production, near Corsicana. She was a child of the Great Depression. Since her family farmed, there was always food on the table, even if their clothes were old and worn. Billie had vivid memories of picking cotton on her parents' farm and riding a horse to school. Billie graduated from Pursley high school in 1942. She then attended Draughon's business school in Dallas and subsequently began her secretarial career at a downtown Dallas hardware store. She held a number of secretarial jobs in Texas and Mississippi banks, at Louisiana State University, and at the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge. She retired in the 1990s to care for her husband, Jimmy. After his death in 2000, she returned to Corsicana. Billie was preceded in death by her husband of 50 years, journalist James S. Featherston; her parents, William and Hallie Stiles of Corsicana, Texas; her brother, Ferrell Stiles of Fairbanks, Alaska; sister Nelda Corley of Corsicana; and niece, Sandra Corley, of Corsicana. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Diane and Dan Worrell of Fayetteville, Arkansas; grandson Casey Worrell of Los Angeles, California; nephew Mike Corley of Sanger, Texas and his children Adrianna and Daniel; and nephew Jay Corley of Lewisville, Texas, and his wife Sundee and children Kristofer and Shianne. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at the Resthaven Gardens of Memory Cemetery, 11817 Jefferson Highway in Baton Rouge. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Special Collections department, University of Arkansas Libraries, 365 N.
