Donald R. Sams, Sr., 79, passed away on Friday, Dec 14, 2012 at his home in Gonzales, Louisiana. He was born in Parkersburg, West Virginia on March 18, 1933. Don graduated from Istrouma High School in 1951 then went on to graduate from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with a degree in Chemical Engineering. He proudly served in the United States Air Force from 1956-1967, being honorably discharged having attained the rank of captain. He was employed by the Great Lakes Chemical Corporation of El Dorado, Arkansas where he retired in 1998. Don was both an unforgettable man and unquenchable spirit. He remains defined by his generosity, great love, learning, innovation and the depth of caring with which he maintained his relationships. A man and life impossible to define in only a few sentences, Don established a legacy of love through the lives of those who knew him. It was those who knew him best who were truly blessed to call him: Dad, Grandpa, PawPaw, brother, son, mentor, and friend. His passing, while so painful for those left behind, is cause for joyous celebration in Heaven. We love you. Don was preceded in death by his parents, Russell F. and Nellie V. Sams; son Steven L. Sams; brothers Jack and Roger Sams; sisters Jo Anne Sams Wilson, and Nancy Sams Jones. Don is survived by sons Donald R. Jr. (Perri) of Somerset, Kentucky, Glenn A. (Julie) of El Dorado, Arkansas; grandchildren Melody, Kendal, David, and Abigail; four nephews and three nieces. As well as his beloved Sallie Emafae Cagle, her son Donnie, daughter Tracy Manuel (Brian), grandchildren Elaina, Juliana, Isabella, and Peyton, who were very dear to him. In accordance with his wishes, there was no public service; however, family, friends, co-workers and acquaintances are encouraged to sign in and share on the website: In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Don's name to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital:
