Jane Levy Strauss, age 85, died peacefully at home on December 25, 2013 in Memphis Tennessee after a long illness. Born July 9th, 1928 to Belle and Edgar S. Levy, Jane spent her youth in Baton Rouge, attended University High, and was a dedicated volunteer with the Red Cross. She Graduated Louisiana State University in 1949 with a B.A. in English where she met her husband, Maury E. Strauss. After graduation, Jane and Maury were married and they moved to Memphis to begin their lives together. Jane became an active volunteer with the Red Cross as giving to others was something she loved doing. Additionally, she was a board member of the Runaway House as well as a volunteer for MIFA. Jane was unwavering in her loyalty to friends and family and she maintained close relationships with childhood friends from Baton Rouge until her death. People were drawn to her because of her high ideals and respect for others and she will be greatly missed. Jane is survived by Maury Strauss, her husband of 63 years, 3 children, Bebe Strauss, Maury Strauss Jr., GiGi Strauss, 3 grandchildren, Jane Carter Gravier, Katie and Joe Strauss, and 4 great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind her beloved sister-in-law, Betty Hect, her niece, Lilly Groh, and nephews, Pat and David Levy. Also special to her life were the people who became family during the course of her long illness; Fran McCay, Diana "Butsy" Seder, Bobbie Craft White, Teresa Chism and Laura Scurlock. Rabbi Micah Greenstein will officiate at the Memorial Service on Tuesday, December 31, at 10:00am in the Danziger Chapel at Temple Israel, 1376 Massey Road. Shiva will follow the funeral service until 5pm at the Strauss home. The family requests that any donations be made to HopeforPaws.org or to any charity of their choosing.
