John Nyman Obituary

Born in Escatawpa, MS on December 7, 1925, Johnny Nyman, a longtime resident of New Orleans, died surrounded by family August 21, 2013 in Baton Rouge. He was 87. During World War II, he enlisted in the Marines at the age of 18. He was deployed to the Pacific and later awarded a Purple Heart for being wounded in the Battle of Okinawa. Following the war, he performed various jobs before earning a degree and teaching certificate from the University of Southern Mississippi. He moved to New Orleans in 1961 to begin teaching in the Orleans Parish Public Schools and spent the majority of his career at Samuel J. Peters Middle School. He also worked as a security guard for Tulane Medical Center for over twenty years. When he was still in good health, he was a regular patron of Molly's at the Market, Harry's Corner Bar, The Fatted Calf, and Johnny Whites, among others. He was known by some as Number 4 and often could be found reading at the bar, feeding the jukebox, and, rumor has it, dancing on occasion to the songs he played. He had a dry wit and a generous heart and he will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his former wife, Ethel "Sunny" Nyman; his children, John "Andy" Nyman, Nanine Nyman McCool, and Tania Nyman; his daughter- and sons-in-law, Angel Bernardi Nyman, James "Bo" McCool, and Rob Johnson; his grandchildren, Lauren Nyman, John "Drew" Nyman, Bryce McCool, Parrish Johnson, and Aidan Johnson. He is preceded in death by his parents, Andrew Nyman and Mary Porter Nyman; his aunt, Delia Davis, who reared him; his sisters, Mildred Reilly and Marguerite Frederic. A service celebrating his life will be held at the Unitarian Church of Baton Rouge on Saturday, Sept. 14th at 11am. An informal service will be held in New Orleans at a later date. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Salvation Army.
