Winston Canning died peacefully in his sleep at 7:45pm Thursday, March 6, 2014. A native of Moreton's Harbor, Newfoundland, he was born October 3, 1914. He was a resident of Baton Rouge for 58 years and retired from Capital Bank and Trust Co. as senior executive vice president in 1979. Prior to moving to Baton Rouge he lived in San Angelo, Texas where he worked for the First National Bank for 20 years. A veteran of World War II he proudly served in the US Navy in the Pacific theater (Okinawa) and was a member of the "greatest generation". He is preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Eva F. Canning, his parents and 3 brothers and a sister. He is survived by 2 sons, Dr. Harold Canning and wife, Pat of Baton Rouge and Ed Canning and wife, Mary, and two grandsons, Mark and Matthew and wife, Kassie all of Zachary. In addition, he is survived by a sister in law, Florence Sholin and a brother in law, Wesley Faulkner and wife, Pat and numerous nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the staff of Southside Gardens and Hospice of Baton Rouge for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Salvation Army or Hospice of Baton Rouge would be appreciated. Visiting will be at Charlet Funeral Home, Inc., Zachary on Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 10am until service at 11:30am conducted by Fr. Chad Jones. Burial will be in Azalea Rest Cemetery, Zachary.
