Alma Alexander Obituary

Alma Lester Alexander was born April 30, 1931, the third child of ten children born to Willie Lester and Gladys Walker Lester. She died August 8, 2017 at 12:33 a.m. She is survived by her son, George Byron Alexander, his wife Amy, and their son, Ben; Five sisters; Mildred Alexander, Joyce Wilson, Billie O'Quinn, and Carol Crain all from Walker, LA and Faye Sims from Porter, TX; Three brothers, Walter Lester from Caney Lake, Charles Lester from Glenmora, and Wayne Lester from Coldwater, MS; and nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends too numerous to name. Alma was baptized in the name of Jesus by Rev. H.L. McGaha at a very early age in Richland Parish and served the Lord all the days of her life. She graduated from Rayville High School in 1948 and enrolled in LA Tech for her first degree. Later she went to the University of Tennessee for a Masters degree because she was interested in teaching deaf children. She married George Curtis Alexander and they moved to Baton Rouge where she taught at the Louisiana School for the Deaf. After getting her doctorate from the University of Arizona she became the principal of LSSD. Later she was asked to be the Superintendent of the Mississippi State School for the Deaf. At this time, Mayor Pete Heine made her the Honorary Mayer of Baker. She made many improvements at the Mississippi school including a new Primary building, better teaching techniques, and higher salaries for teachers and staff. Deaf adults in the community came to her for help with their problems. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Grace Church at 13845 Hooper Road in Central on Saturday, August 12th. The funeral will begin at 1 p.m. with a graveside service following at Hillcrest Memorial Gardens in Baker. The family would like to thank Bridgeway Healthcare and Hospice and all the staff and caregivers of House of Grace for their care.
