Bradford Garafola Obituary

"Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." John 15:13. There are no words to adequately express the sorrow in losing our brother, Deputy Bradford Allen "Brad" Garafola. He began his employment with the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office on April 23, 1992 at the age of 21. He worked in the Parish Prison as a Corrections Deputy for 2 years and then transferred to Uniform Patrol, serving at the Kleinpeter Substation and in the Traffic Division. In 2007, Brad transferred to the Civil Division where he worked in Civil Process and lastly in Foreclosures. He received the Civil Deputy of the Month award twice during his career. Brad touched the lives of many people, in ways that we were not even aware of until now. Although his home was split between being an Alabama, Roll Tide fan, Brad was a true LSU fan. Go Tigers! Brad leaves behind his wife Tonja and four children, Garrett Garafola, Braley Nikole Garafola, Brad Allen Garafola Jr. and Samantha Miley Garafola. Parents, John and Emily Marie Garafola (Baton Rouge, La.), his brothers, John Brett Garafola (Baton Rouge, La.) and Brian (Christie) Garafola (Livonia, La). He is also survived by his mother-in-law, Mary Ellen (Glenn) Wells (Denham Springs, La.), sister-in-law, Jennifer Lemoine (Denham Springs, La.). A brother-in-law, James Cooper (fiance' Kenya Harris both of Baton Rouge, La.), sister-in-law Natasha (Cory) Dufrene (Walker, La.), paternal uncle "SJ" (Linda) Garafola (Denham Springs, La.), and (maternal aunt) Sheila Currier (Loranger, La.). Brad also leaves behind, a grandmother, Ms. Dorothy Hardegree (Mobile, Alabama). Brad cherished the friendship he held between, Mr. Robert Bowman and Mr. Anthony Aguiniga, who he both enjoyed cooking and entertaining with. He also leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews and countless friends. Brad is preceded in death by paternal grandparents Sam (Ethel) Garafola, maternal grandparents Austin (Christine) Miley. Brad was a 1989 graduate of Broadmoor High School in Baton Rouge, La., where he also played baseball and football. The family request visiting hours to be observed on Saturday, July 23, 2016 from 12 pm until the Funeral Service at 2pm, located at Istrouma Baptist Church, 10500 Sam Rushing Drive, Baton Rouge, LA 70816. Deputy Garafola's kind, compassionate, generous heart and gentle spirit continue to live on through your cherished memories as well as through the lives he has touched in life and in death. What a man of selfless courage he was, to the extent that he willingly laid down his life to try to save a fellow officer. I appreciate the twenty-four years of dedicated service that Brad gave our community. Mrs.Garafola, the children and the entire family are in my prayers. Tonja, may the Lord give you wisdom as you parent your children and extend his grace, comfort, and encouragement to all of you. Deputy Garafola is an inspiration for all of us. May we look to this humble, valiant servant and strive to make a difference in people's lives as he did.

Brad was a very special person, I knew from the moment I met him. We talked nearly everyday way back when, and he was always encouraging, respectful, and so funny to be around. From a fallen officer's daughter

July 22, 2016

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.
