Charles Sartain Obituary

Judge C. Lenton Sartain Jr. passed away peacefully November 15 at the age of 97. He was born September 19, 1920, and was a lifelong resident of Baton Rouge. As a child, he enjoyed spending his summers in French Settlement with many cousins and his grandmother who only spoke French. In his youth, he was active in St. James Church and participated in Episcopal youth programs across the country. He was proud of earning the rank of Eagle Scout. Lenton graduated from Catholic High School and attended LSU. While at LSU he was a member of ROTC. In June of 1942, he enlisted in the US Army 82nd Airborne Division's 319 Gilder Field Artillery Battalion. He participated in most major campaigns of World War II including North Africa, the Invasion of Italy, Normandy on D-Day, Market Garden and the Battle of the Bulge, and helped liberate a concentration camp. He earned several medals for his bravery and leadership, including the Silver Star. He left active duty in September of 1945 as a Captain and returned to Baton Rouge to marry the "love of his life" Peggy Lou Huddleston of Shreveport. He entered law school at LSU, receiving his degree in 1948, fulfilling his lifelong ambition to practice law. In 1951 he was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict as an airborne artillery instructor at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, where their first daughter, Lynn, was born. In September of 1952, Lenton and his family returned to Baton Rouge and began rebuilding his law practice. In 1953, a second daughter, Charlotte, was added to the family. He was elected Family Court Judge in 1960 and was elected to the Louisiana First Circuit Court of Appeal in 1966. He retired in 1978 but continued to hear cases by assignment and remained active in the community. Throughout his life, he participated in the community and church affairs. He was a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason and Past Grand Master of St. James Lodge. He was a founder of Acacia Fraternity at LSU where he was fondly referred to as "Chief". In his 80s, he was instrumental in founding the Scottish Rite Early Learning Center serving children with special needs. In addition to his family and community, Lenton loved duck hunting, raising Labrador retrievers, camping, cooking jambalaya for crowds, and telling a good story. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years Peggy Lou Huddleston Sartain, parents Charles and Ella Brignac Sartain, brother and his wife Elwood and Peggy Landry Sartain. Lenton is survived by two daughters and their husbands Lynn and Len Kilgore, Charlotte and Paul Provenza; six grandchildren Parker and wife Erin Kilgore, Evan Kilgore and wife Michele Arms, Covey Kilgore, Sam and wife Luella Provenza, Ben Provenza, and Charlie and wife Alison Provenza. "Pop" had 4 great-grandchildren. He left this world as he lived his life, with peace, grace, and consideration for others. The family wishes to thank St. James Place and especially Catherine Woolfolk and Kourtney Davenport for many years of loving care and laughter. A masonic service will be held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home, 825 Government Street, on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. Visitation will be at St. James Church on Monday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. followed by the funeral at noon. In lieu of flowers donations could be made to Acacia Foundation of Baton Rouge, P.O. Box 113031, Metairie, LA 70011; Childhood Learning Center at P.O. Memories and Condolences
for Charles Sartain

Not sure what to say?

My condolences to the Sartain family. My father fought in your dad's unit, A battery of the 319th, from North Africa to Germany. I spoke with Captain Sartain about 10 years ago, a true honor and a hero. He remembered my father from their days in Italy and northern England. Although we only spoke once, your dad made me feel like a friend for all times. I will always remember him fondly, never forgotten by this paratrooper. Capt. Sartain went "all the way." and did so proudly. God bless him and your families.

We loved being Southdowns neighbors with Judge and Mrs. Sartain in the 80's! Such a lovely couple...Always smiling! Especially loved seeing her happily driving the convertible he bought for her! What wonderful memories you must have...Thoughts and prayers...
