Bennett, Chester Hiram Born Oct. 14, 1926, in Robert, Mr. Bennett passed on at his home in Smithdale, Miss., on Monday, May 29, 2006. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he returned to Louisiana in the 1950s and established Capitol Catering Co. in Baton Rouge. A longtime resident of Baton Rouge and Ethel, he was active in prison ministry and civic and community affairs. He volunteered at the Louisiana War Veterans Home in Jackson and was a member of the Lions Club, Local 198 and Mars Hill Baptist Church, Mars Hill, Miss. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Clara Battles Bennett; brother and sister-in-law, Calvin and Janice Bennett; two sons and their wives, Byron and Victoria Bennett of Hesperia, Calif., and Chet and Peggy Bennett, Anaheim, Calif.; grandson, James Bennett, Anaheim; two stepsons and their wives, John and Sandra Darouse and Allan and Joyce Darouse, all of Smithdale; two stepdaughters, Ann Gayle Darouse and Fran Bryant, both of Baton Rouge; three stepgrandchildren, Marcie Little, Michael Bryant and Wendy Bryant; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. Bennett was preceded in death by his parents, Byron and Mary Bennett; sisters, Wilma and Althea Bennett; and brothers, Albert and Burnell Bennett. Visiting at Catchings Funeral Home, 506 Maryland Ave., McComb, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Visiting in the funeral home chapel on Thursday from 10 a.m. until funeral service at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Brett Campbell officiating. Graveside service at Battles-Bennett Family Cemetery, Amite, at 1 p.m. Thursday.
