Ilona McGlynn Obituary

Beloved mother, we miss you. Our present sufferings are not worth comparing to the glory that awaits us! O God, show us your power to save and welcome Helen to Paradise! She is absent from her body so we rest knowing that she is with You. Helen "Momo" died at 9:51 PM on Friday, March 4, 2016 at her home on Delgado Drive at the age of 86. She was a mama to all, career housewife, and the devoted mother of 5 children. Helen was very involved with PTA at Walnut Hills, Highland, and U-High in the 1960s and 70s. She loved Southside League Swim meets at Bocage and AAU swimming with the Bengals and the YMCA. Born in Budapest, Hungary on September 13, 1929, her family fled to Austria during WWII. From Austria she moved to Argentina and finally came to the United States in 1948 when she was 19 years old. In Tallahassee, she met Sean McGlynn from Dungloe, County Donegal, Ireland and spent the next 35 years with him as his wife. Later in life, Momo traveled around Louisiana and Florida to visit her children and grandchildren. She finally settled down on Delgado Drive in the University Hills Subdivision near LSU. She loved to cook and was featured in The Advocate on numerous occasions baking Hungarian Beigli and cooking Hungarian Paprika Chicken. She had a B.A. degree from FSU in Art History and was very creative and loved working on arts and crafts projects with children at home and at schools around Baton Rouge. She is survived by her loving sons, Seán Ernst, Daniel Julian, Brien Charles, and Alan Patrick; their wives Katy Avery Fox McGlynn, Gabrielle Valentina Pastore McGlynn, Mary Lynn Justice McGlynn; daughter, Sheila and husband Jeff LeBlanc; 17 grandchildren, Brendan, Rory, Cassie, Julia, Riley, Olivia, Aidan, and Ethan; Travis Martin and his mother, Judy Crain; granddaughter, Ryan and her father John Starling; Jennifer, Robert, Emily, and little Brian and their mother Jacque Roberts; Ainsley and Emma and their mother Charlotte Bourgeois; and grandson, Logan and his mother Nancy Miller. She also has two honorary daughters, Stacie Samaha and Della Greens. She has three great-grandchildren: Ella and Finn are the children of Emily and Tony Vasallo and Iris is the daughter of Cassie and Keegan Lee. She is also survived by her ex-husband, LSU Chemistry Professor, Sean P. McGlynn; a younger brother, Julius Salacz von Dohnányi and his children Cathy and Michael. She was preceded in death by her mother, Ilona (Helen) von Dohnányi; her father, world famous pianist and conductor, Ernst von Dohnányi; her biological father, Salácz Gyula; and her nephew Phillip Salácz Dohnányi. She requested that she be cremated after death and that everyone please simply remember her as she was when we were all much younger. Her ashes will be laid to rest in Tallahassee with her mother, father, and maternal grandmother. Because of her shyness, she requested that no funeral services be held in her honor and, that way, no one can spend their money on flowers! If you knew her, then you know that she loved you and loves you still. Rabenhorst Funeral Home Downtown is in charge of the arrangements. Condolences can be offered at www.rabenhorst.com.

My dear friend, Helen, I will always remember the good times we had when our children swam on the same swim teams throughout their young lives. Helen was so special to everyone, sharing her wonderful recipes as we picnicked at our swim meets. I know God has plans for Helen, as I send my love to all of the large, happy, family.

Dear Family of Helen,

Helga and I, Klaus Fischer, express our sincere condolences.
We miss Helen very much. She was such a great host at gatherings at your house during my time in the Chemistry Department at LSU. We still remember Helen as a warm and caring mother, who loved her children above everything in her life. Her Hungarian dishes were out of this world!
A great friend and human being is gone, but we will always keep her in our memory.
Special greetings to my former student Sean!

As a young boy at Highland Elementary, I would love the days when Mrs. McGlynn would come and share her love of art with us. Not only did she give us relief from the mundane school work, she brought us into her colorful world and taught us to create, think and understand the beauty of things. This has stayed with me for my entire life.
