James Allen "Jim" Dejean, age 88 and 10 days, died on December 8, 2017, at home in Lafayette, La., surrounded by his family. He was born on Thanksgiving Day, November 28, 1929, to Clifton and Eunice Dejean in Plaquemine, La. James graduated from Plaquemine High in 1946 and LSU in 1950 with a degree in geology. Following graduation, he was a scout for Gulf Oil in New Orleans. Drafted into the US Army in 1951, he served in the Army Chemical Center at Edgewood, Md. At Edgewood, he met the love of his life, Patricia Crawford of Havre de Grace, Md. They married on May 17, 1953, after a short engagement. Following the Army, Jim returned to Gulf Oil in New Orleans. He and Pat made their home and raised their children in New Orleans and Metairie. He graduated from Loyola University law school in 1971, earning a JD. Jim relocated to Lafayette in 1975, working as a landman for Hawthorne, Woods, and Great Southern oil companies. He was an avid reader of history and "who-done-its." He and Pat were passionate Scrabble players. James was preceded in death by his parents Cliff and Eunice; brother Cliff Jr; and his in-laws, Brooks and Genevieve Crawford. Jim is survived by Pat, his beloved wife of over 64 years; son Bill of Lafayette; daughter Lee LeBlanc and husband Chris of Destrehan; son Mike of San Angelo, Texas; grandson Mike Arthur of River Ridge; granddaughter Amanda Arthur and husband Michael Baker of Metairie; and Jenny. Jim donated his remains to the LSU Health Science Center for medical education and research. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made in his honor to Hospice of Acadiana or the charity of your choice.
