Retired Southern University Professor James C. Gist Jr., age 97, passed away on May 27, 2018, in Orlando, FL. Born and raised in Spartanburg, SC, he was a resident of Baton Rouge, LA, for 65 years. He was the oldest son of the late Emmie and James C. Gist Sr. and the brother of nine siblings. He is survived by his children, James C. Gist III, Jacalyn Gist and Rosalyn Gist Porter; his granddaughter, Kai Porter; his brother, William Gist; and his sister, Sallie Fisher. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Morton Gist; his brother, Rufus Gist; and six sisters. He was an Army Medic during World War II who taught physics, earth science, physical science and chemistry at Southern University for 43 years. He was a voracious reader, captivating storyteller, and a loving father. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and St. Michael's and All Angels Episcopal Church. Visitation Friday, June 15, 2018, at 11:00 am until religious service at 12:00 pm, Hall's Celebration Center, 9348 Scenic Highway, Baton Rouge, LA 70807.
