What a wonderful physician he was. I just found this here. Always smiling, always helpful. Can't tell you how he swooped in and saved me from an unnamed hospital staff many years ago. I will miss this man!

Our deepest sympathy is extended to Dr. Osterberger's family. He will be sadly missed by everyone he came in contact with in all walks of life. Dr. Osterberger was our primary care physician when we moved to Baton Rouge more than 40 years ago. He was very kind, patient and caring of all those in his care. He always had extra information and tips on how to stay healthy, he was a 24/7 doctor, you could always call him. We will keep his family in prayer. Eternal rest, grant to him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and all the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Jim and I were roommates and student athletic trainers at LSU during the time of Marty Broussard, Charlie McClendon, Bert Jones, and Tommy Cassanova. During that time, only the best trainers made the road trips with the team. Even though Jimmy only stayed in Baton Rouge for three years prior to entering medical school, Marty recognized his talents and took him on the road trips while I stayed back in Broussard Hall with all of those with lesser talents. Marty was happy and sad to see his star leave early but was overjoyed when Jimmy returned as one of the team physicians. I could not have had a better roommate and friend. We worked together, laughed together, and cried together. I also departed Baton Rouge after three years and continued to enjoy time with Jimmy in New Orleans as I completed dental school. Jimmy was finest kind. The world is a lesser place without him in it. Doug Damm, Lexington, KY. LSU BR 1970-73, LSUSD 1973-77

Although he was my husbands "Doc" of 18 years ago, he remained in my heart as more than a doctor but a friend. I witnessed his caring extend outside the office when he and his wife visited the funeral home when lost my husband lost his battle after 4 years of treatment. Thank God for the continual study of James Osterberger that has helped many. Hearing of his passing was a great lost even to this day. My prayers extend to his family for peace in their lives to know of how he was loved by many.
Rest in Peace.

I worked with Jimmy Osterberger while I was a Student trainer at LSU. Dr. O was one of us having been a trainer under Doc Broussard at LSU he treated us as contemporaries and I learned a lot from him.
He was gentle and care
ing his words and leadership were amazing. Soft spoken you hung on his counsel because it was important and usually spot on.

Words alone cannot begin to express the loss felt by Jimmy's passing! He was one of the smartest, hard working and compassionate men that I have ever known! His love for life, medicine, family and friends was beyond measure. I had the priviledge of working next to him for many years. He was more like family than my boss! He made such big strides in the research and treatment of hiv/aides and his passion showed through to his patients and fellow Physicians. Heaven has gained another Angel! He will always be loved and highly regarded for his acheivements! May God bless and comfort his family and loved ones.

Dr. Osterberger was the doctor that finally listened to me. He saw the person in his office and not just another patient. It was a relief when he gave me my diagnosis. There may not be a cure for my illness but just hearing him validate my concerns was a huge blessing.
So saddened to learn that he dealt with Alzheimer's. I pray he is now resting in peace. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and everyone he touched. May the Lord bless and comfort you through this difficult loss.
Sincerely,

It was a great privilege to have known Jimmie through most of my life. He was not just a friend, but an inspiration, the product of a loving, caring family. The obit stated that he "never met a stranger". Perhaps that comment describes to me his legacy, more than anything else. As his brother stated, "Until we meet again, Rest In Peace".

What a brilliant mind has been lost with his passing. For those who were fortunate to have known him personally, professionally or as one of the thousands of LSU athletes who competed safely under his watchful eye,
all are a little less whole today. On the field or in the training room, his medical presence drew you to him for guidance as a moth to a flame. I was always amazed for how many occasions he provided the solution to some of our most difficult medical situations. I was not alone then nor am I today with the opinion that at LSU he was at his finest and he truly was the Doctor for the Doctors. Like most gifted persons, Jim Osterberger was a star in the many areas he felt called to serve; unfortunately, also like many of those who have the most to give, he left us far too soon. Rest thou in peace; the struggle is over.

It is with great sorrow that I learned of the passage of this man who was a giant in the field of medicine. As a former medical social worker at Our Lady of the Lake RMC it was my privilege to assist him in the care of his patients. I remember him as one of the best diagnosticians in the state of Louisiana. God bless you Dr. Osterberger. May you walk with God.

Remembering him from early years in St Francisville visits to my sister Julia & her husband Whitman Wilcox (James' uncle) who lived next door to James' childhood home.
I am an RN & was proud when I learned in later years James had become a doctor.
