Jackie Cooney, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, passed away July 1, 2017 at her home in Boise. Jackie was born December 2, 1927 in Riverside, CA. She was the older of two children born to Ward G. Tornell and Margaret Wahl Tornell. Jackie's father was an accountant, entrepreneur, and farmer. Both Jackie and her daughters spent time on the farm in Mississippi. Jackie graduated from the University of California-Berkeley with a bachelor's in Psychology. While at UC-Berkeley, Jackie met and married her loving husband, Jack Cooney. Jackie moved with newborn daughter Deborah to Heidelberg, Germany when Jack was drafted into the US Army. Carolyn, her second daughter, was born in Germany. Jack and Jackie and the girls returned to the US and Jack was hired by Morrison-Knudsen in Los Angeles. While in LA they welcomed their son, John. Jack's work with Morrison-Knudsen moved the family all over the world including locations throughout the U.S., and Canada. In 1999 Jack retired and he and Jackie returned to Boise. Jackie was a generous patron of the arts in Boise including Boise, Philharmonic, Opera Idaho, Ballet Idaho, Boise Little Theatre, and the Idaho Shakespeare Festival to name a few. Jackie was very active in her church, Hillview United Methodist Church, where she enthusiastically joined the choir each week. Jackie was always on the go, splitting her time between the Golden Garden Club, PEO, Ustick Apple Blossom Club, the Order of St. Luke's, Great Decisions, and AAUW. While away from Boise, Jack and Jackie embraced being members of the St. Luke's Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, LA and the First United Methodist Church in St. Charles, MO. Jackie is survived by her daughter, Deborah Campbell of Boise; son, John D. Cooney of San Diego, CA; six grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and numerous nephews, nieces and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Cooney; her daughter, Carolyn Cooney Martin and her sister, Meredith Tornell Sayre. A Celebration of Life will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Saturday, July 22 at Hillview United Methodist Church, 8525 W. Ustick Rd., Boise, Idaho 83704. Officiating will be Rev. Barbara Nixon and Rev. Ralph Lawrence. A reception hosted by The United Methodist Congregational Care Group will held at the church immediately following the service. Inurnment will be held Monday, July 24th at 10:00 A.M. at the Idaho State Veterans Cemetery, Boise. Remembrances may be left for the family at www.AccentFuneral.com. Services are under the direction of Accent Funeral Home, Meridian. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Jackie's name to the Downtown Treasure valley Family YMCA, 1050 W. State Street, Boise, ID 83702; Whittier Elementary School, 301 N. 29th St., Boise, ID 83702 or Opera Idaho, 513 South 8th St., Boise, ID 83702.
