John Joseph Bienvenu (Benji), a longtime resident of Baton Rouge, died on July 6, 2017 in Baton Rouge at age 87. He was born on December 3, 1929 in Lake Charles, Louisiana. He was preceded in death by his mother, Fabiola Guirard Bienvenu and his father, Edward Ignace Marie Bienvenu Sr. He was also preceded in death by his older sister, Lollie Belle Bienvenu Thorp and her husband John, his older brother, Edward Ignace Marie Bienvenu Jr. and his wife Jeanette and his older brother St. Clair Bienvenu Sr. He was a graduate of E. D. White Catholic High School in Thibodaux, Louisiana. John attended Louisiana State University and graduated from Soule Business College in New Orleans, Louisiana He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Vocationally, John was proud of his position as an Executive Assistant at the James Boyce Machinery Company. John later retired after many years with South Central Bell. (A.T.&T.) John enjoyed the performing arts and playing bridge with friends. He taught dance for many years in Baton Rouge and he danced competitively. John was typically found in attendance at most social functions in Baton Rouge where dancing was featured and his "dance card" was always full. John performed and often sang in many of the plays offered at the Baton Rouge Little Theater, where he served as Head Make-up Artist for many years. John was a gifted and prolific conversationalist and he always enjoyed the culinary arts of family and friends. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Martha Bienvenu (Mrs. St. Clair Bienvenu Sr.) and nieces Jackie Bienvenu Womack and her husband John, Toni Bienvenu Shinabery and her husband Rick, and Barbara Bienvenu Grady and her husband Joe. He is also survived by three nephews: Richard Bienvenu and his wife Michelle, Charles Thorp and his wife Jeanine and St. Clair Bienvenu Jr. and his wife Janet. He is also survived by multiple grand-nieces and nephews and great-grandnieces and nephew. Rabenhorst on Government Street is in charge of arrangements. His funeral mass will be at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Baton Rouge on July 18, 2017 at 2pm. Visitation will be 1pm to 2pm at the Cathedral prior to the funeral. He will be interred at Roselawn Memorial Park on North Street in the family plot. Rev. Paul Counce will officiate at his funeral.
