Mary Delambre Obituary

A funeral service for Mary B. Delambre, will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 21, 2017, at the Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas. Reverend Diane Bijeaux will conduct the service. Burial will follow in the Chenal Cemetery in Jarreau, LA. Mary Delambre, a resident of Sunset, Louisiana, passed away on Thursday, August 17, 2017 at her home. She was 97 years old and had planned to live to be 100. After graduating from high school she dreamed of being a nurse. Her cousin, Fred Dallas, was inspired by her dream and paid for her to go to nursing school. She graduated from nursing school as a registered nurse in 1940, the same year she married the love of her life. After having 4 children, she became a Realtor and builder in the 1950s and early 1960s. After some setbacks in the housing industry, she decided to go back to school and becoming a nurse anesthetist in her mid forty's. As a nurse anesthetist she worked at several small hospitals before moving to Opelousas and serving the Opelousas General Hospital, St. Luke's Hospital in Arnaudville, and Acadia St Landry Hospital in Church Point. At 68 instead of retiring, she decided to become a licensed florist and opened Cherie's Flower and Craft shop and Mary's Day Lily garden in Sunset Louisiana. She served as president of the Day Lily Society and was very active in the organization for many years. Education was very important to her and she insisted that her children and grandchildren attend and graduate from college. She helped many people in many different ways, from encouraging them to pursue their dreams to lending a helping hand when needed. She enjoyed food, dancing, fellowship, and traveling with friends and relatives. She drove to Alaska several times (all the way to the Arctic Circle), visited about 40 states, and Canada in her RV often buying Day Lilies along the way. She is survived by her sister, Betty Broughton Price of New Iberia; daughter, Blanche Delambre Cano (and husband Adolfo Cano of Baton Rouge); and 3 grandsons, Christopher Cano (and wife Melissa of Baton Rouge), Brian Delambre (and wife Stephanie of Louisville, Kentucky), Jason Delambre (and wife Amelia of Frankfort, Kentucky); daughter-in-law, Alice Holmes Delambre of Frankfort, Kentucky; 6 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and long-time friend Cynthia Smith. She is preceded in death by her parents, Willie Thompson Broughton and Philip William Broughton; her husband Jules John Delambre Jr.; brothers Dallas Broughton, H.A. Broughton, Robert Broughton, P.W. Broughton, sister Dorothy Broughton Mix; son Jules William Delambre; daughters Cherie Delambre and June Delambre Walker. Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 20, 2017 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Sibille Funeral Home in Opelousas. The funeral home will reopen at 9:00 a.m. on Monday. The family wishes to thank the caregivers Wanda Sam, Dana Sam and Jennifer Green who took such exceptional and loving care of her as well as Hospice & Palliative Care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice & Palliative Care of Opelousas, 336 Heather Dr, Opelousas, LA 70570.
