On Friday, November 15, 2013, Pastor Matthew L. Stephens made his transition to be with our Heavenly Father at 71 years of age. He was one of six children born to the late Rev. Lester Sr. and Joeanna Stephens. He was a resident of Geismar, LA and attended Prairieville High School. He joined the US Army and later enlisted in the US Army Reserve. After receiving an honorable discharge, he later attended Delgado Community College and Southern University. He was married to Lillie BerryStephens and together that had one daughter, Francine, both of whom he loved dearly. He chartered and served as Pastor/Founder of Word of Faith Outreach Ministries, Inc. in Gonzales, Louisiana which later became known as Word of Faith International Ministries, Inc. He along with his wife developed Stephens Estates Subdivision which is located in Geismar, Louisiana. He was employed at Gillis W. Long Hansen Disease Center as an Accountable Area Property Manager and retired after 36+ years of service in 1999. He is survived by his wife of 43 years Lillie Stephens; his daughter Francine Stephens; three brothers Charley Stephens (Esther), Frank Stephens and Lester Stephens, Jr. (Brenda); two sisters Shirley Jackson (Willie Sr.) and NeomiaBolden; two sisters-in-law, Louella Senegal and Alma Phillips; one brother-in-law, Kenry Berry; two god-children, Inger Stephens and Angela Jones and a host of nieces, nephews, and other cousins.He was preceded in death by his parents, Joeanna W. Stephens, Rev. Lester Stephens, Sr., and one brother, Johnnie Stevenson. The funeral services will be held at Word of Faith Outreach Center, 1420 S. Darla Avenue, Gonzales, LA, on Friday, November 22, 2013 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow after the services at ResthavenGardens of Memory in Baton Rouge, LA. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:00 until 10:45 AM prior to the services. Lawson-Rollins Purple Shield Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
