Mildred Saucier Wood Gladney, born April 7, 1912, to Dr. Merrick Edmond Saucier and Florence Hasson Saucier of Lafayette, passed away on Wednesday, November 15, 2017. Millie, a native of Lafayette, had lived in Baton Rouge since World War II. She was twice married, first to her late C.C. "Red" Wood in 1939 until his untimely death in 1979. That marriage produced her only offspring, Robert Maxwell Wood, now of Cypress, Texas. Her second husband was the late William B. Gladney of Baton Rouge, whom she married in 1984 at the age of 72. They shared a love of fishing and traveling together. After receiving news that her husband, C.C. Wood was being held prisoner of war by the Germans, Millie was active with the Red Cross for the duration of World War II, helping pack and ship foods for the American troops. Her volunteering spirit continued during her married life in Baton Rouge. She was a regular at the Mary Byrd Perkins Cancer Center for several years. She was a member of the Novel Club and enjoyed years of China painting. She enjoyed gardening and had an avid love of fishing. Millie moved to St. James Place in 2001 after many years in her home on Meadow Lea Drive in Baton Rouge. Along with her parents, she was also preceded in death by her only brother Maxwell. She is survived by her only son, Robert M. Wood and his wife, Mary Etta Taylor Wood of Cypress, Texas, and the family and descendants of the late Charles Wallace Gladney and descendants of the late William Washman Gladney. Family and friends will gather at the Lafayette Protestant Cemetery for a graveside service on Monday, November 20, 2017, at 1:00PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mrs. Gladney's honor can be made to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, www.shrinershospitalsforchildren.org or a charity of your choice. Indeed an inspiration to all of us, Millie gave joy to the latter years of William Gladney's life, lived on longer than all her friends, and became a companion, mentor, (and, for a long time) driver/facilitator to the younger (80 and 90 year old) folks she lived with at St James. Sweet and loving, she gives all us youngsters a model we can pursue.

One of my favorite neighbors in Meadow Lea. She was so kind and friendly to all of us "neighborhood kids". She will be remembered fondly.

For the past several years Millie has been an inspiration to many. We shared many laughs together , celebrated our birthdays together and enjoyed talking about her life stories.
She will be greatly missed but never forgotten.
