Newton James Obituary

Newton Ward James ,65, passed away July 4, 2013 at his home in Summit, MS. Visitation is at 9:00 a.m. Monday, July 8, at J. J. White Memorial Presbyterian Church in McComb, MS until services there at 10:00 a.m. The Reverend John Rankin Wilbourne, III and Reverend Charles Ray will officiate. Burial will follow in Hollywood Cemetery. Hartman-Sharkey Funeral Home of McComb is in charge of the arrangements. Mr. James was born September 2, 1947 in McComb to Newton Haskin and Mary Lucile Ward James. He attended local public schools and graduated from McComb High School in 1965. He continued his education at the University of Mississippi and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1969. He was a member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. Following his college graduation, he volunteered for the U. S. Army serving from 1969-1972 and advancing from Private to First Lieutenant. He was stationed overseas in Germany and Korea. After his army service, he returned to McComb and worked in the family business, the Newton James Insurance Agency and was president and owner when he sold the business. He received the designation of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter in 1980. He returned to college at Southeastern University in Hammond and received a Master of Arts Degree in history in 2005. He taught world history at Franklin County High School from 2006 to 2010 and American government and economics at South Pike High School from 2010 to 2012. Civic contributions include being a founding member of the Pike County Arts Council and serving as vice president and Chairman of the Board of Advisors. For many years he was a member of the McComb Rotary Club. He was a Paul Harris Fellow and served as President, Vice President, Secretary-Treasurer, and a member of the Rotary Board of Directors. He served as a member of the Summit Planning Commission from 1979-1982 and was a board member of the Mississippi Humanities Council. He was a lifelong member of J. J. White Presbyterian Church where in previous years he taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and was elected a deacon. He loved planning trips, traveling the world with his wife and reading history. He is preceded in death by his father; one aunt, Daisy Jane Belle Caufield and one uncle, Van Owen James. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Toni Terrell James of Summit, MS, his mother Mary Lucile Ward James, his sister Anne James Wilbourne of Hammond, LA, one aunt, Daisy Belle James Caulfield, his two nephews, John Rankin Wilbourne, III and wife Morgen of Los Angeles, CA and James Potter Terrell of Baton Rouge, two nieces, Caroline Wilbourne Homan and husband Gregory of Dallas, TX and Katherine Louise Terrell of New Orleans and five great nieces and nephews, Walker James Homan and Shelby Catherine Homan of Dallas and John Ranking Wilbourne IV, Emmaline Beatrice Wilbourne and William Samms Wilbourne of Los Angeles and his brother-in-law James Miller Terrell and wife Debra of Baton Rouge, LA. Pallbearers will be Dr. Ben Crawford, Todd Carlisle, Mac Gordon, William Healey, Lane Holmes and James Potter Terrell. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Lamar Burrow and Petey Smith. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to J. J. White Presbyterian Church, P. O. Box 774, McComb, MS 39649 or Pike-Amite-Walthall Library System, 1022 Virginia Avenue, McComb, MS 39648.
